Gaming Chocobo Tales: Card Confusion

Hello, I have the Chocobo tales on the DS( Haven't played it in a long time). And some of the cards have only Shields on them, but it says Deals 3 damage or etc. How do you get the card to attack? Because when I summon the ones with only shields on them that says they deal damage, they do not deal any, they just skip them over?

they counter?... or they have requirements such as the crystal stuff.

No, not the ones that require crystal things.
As in, like a card with only shields on their card, no attacking(sword) ones.
But the ones with only shields say "deals 1 damage" but they dont.

means if someone attacks that card with sword or magic the card will activate causing damage
