Hacking Changing firmware on a Japanese 3DS

I was wondering. Will the new Gateway 3DS make it possible to install a European or American firmware on my Japanese 3DS. Or is there any other way to do this?

Use the region free and firmware spoofing provided by the gateway flashcart.


The current answer to that is no you can't replace the 3DS firmware with one from a different region.

I'd love for this to be possible someday. I'm not sure how exactly the region check works, or exactly how Gateway avoids it, but if the firmware encryption method is the same for all regions and there are no differences in hardware, it could be feasible to use a limited form of firmware spoofing to change regions using the firmware contained in an out-of-region ROM, and maybe also software-based downgrading (not that that would be all that useful since you'd still need hardware mods to go above 4.5).

Just buy an EU/US 3DS with 4.0-4.5 and swap shells.
