i'm about to do a system transfer between two systems that both have CFW
and i'm going to be using the same sd card from the source system on the target console,
will there be any payloads and other such files i'll need to replace so cfw will work as intended?
another question is; when you do a system transfer with freeshop games, they get deleted after transferring, but is it the whole game itself, or just the ticket data?

let me know if you can!

thanks!!

With both systems working as should. The transfer will not mess with those settings. You will not need to add any payloads or anything. When transfering games from freeshop. They do get transfered but will not show up at first as you need to restore the tickets with something such as tikshop

can backing up the sysNAND BEFORE transfer on the source console be enough to make the Tickets of those games appear after a restore on the source console?

Let me get this straight.
  1. You want to keep a copy of your source n3DSXL's Nintendo 3DS folder and create a SysNAND backup.
  2. Then, you want to System Transfer your source n3DSXL stuff over to your target n3DSXL (which btw, won't work for pirated games).
  3. After that's done, you recopy your Nintendo 3DS folder back onto your source SD card and restore the SysNAND. Now both your source and target n3DSXL systems have the same set of games. Hurrah!
Not so fast. BAD IDEA.

If your target n3DSXL ever goes online and uses a Nintendo service like eShop, Nintendo will now see both your source and target n3DSXL have the same movable.sed and NNID. This can get the two banned. Also, I think your target n3DSXL stuff will get automatically deleted.

I'm (re-)telling you like before from your own thread:
Backup your games in GodMode9 and the saves with Checkpoint/JKSM. Do the System Transfer if you want the NNID from the first n3DSXL to the second n3DSXL. Reinstall pirated games with FBI and restore the saves with whatever manager you used. You got CFW on both, so there's nothing stopping you.

You can have both n3DSXL with the same set of games and saves but keep their personal infos separate that way.

almost correct- I would also want to transfer the transfer sysNAND to the soruce 3DS(tn) model... but if a restore doesn't bring all the games and saves back? then its not worth it.

so then I'll have to do it your way and then create a new SYSnand when its all done yeah?

A SysNAND image from one 3DS is not interchangeable or usable on another 3DS. Each SysNAND is uniquely encrypted to the 3DS it came from.

oh boy... alright,

I hope, for convenient sake, that after the transfer is done, when I swap SD cards that the saves will stay after the tickets are installed... at least for the GBA games. or do I have to back all of those up as well?

All your pirated games will have spoofed tickets. The same goes for custom made Virtual Console injected games including the GBA ones. Custom firmware ignores fake tickets and treats them as if they're real.

You back up your saves in a decrypted form using one of those mentioned save managers. In fact, you can share your saves with other CFW 3DS users if you wish to.

However, Game Boy Advance Virtual Console titles are a special case.

****

I got good news but some bad news. Mostly good but still bad.

The good news.
It is possible to back up your GBA VC saves using GodMode9.
Inject and dump GBA VC saves: Find the options to do this inside the A button menu for agbsave.bin in the S: drive. Keep in mind that you need to start the specific GBA game on your console before dumping / injecting the save.

The bad news.
If you have a lot of GBA games, you're going to have a bad time.
  1. Launch the GBA VC game of your choice, exit back to HOME Menu, and then turn off the 3DS.
  2. In GodMode9, go to [S:] SYSNAND VIRTUAL/agbsave.bin and select AGBSAVE options... > Dump GBA VC save.
  3. Your save file will be in the gm9/out folder named like this: 000400000XXXXX00.gbavc.sav.
  4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 for every GBA game. Yikes. You might want to write down which game goes to each XXXXX.

How to tell if your GBA save was backed up correctly?

You may use a desktop Game Boy Advance emulator like mGBA with it's parent *.gba rom.
  1. Match the names of the *.gba and *.sav files placed in the same directory.
  2. Launch your game with mGBA and see if your save is intact.

M
ore bad news.

In order to restore the decrypted save back onto your GBA VC on the target n3DSXL, you have to reverse the order.
  1. Launch the GBA game and then turn off the 3DS.
  2. Go to your gm9/out folder and press (Y) on the backed up 000400000XXXXX00.gbavc.sav that correspond to that game.
    • You want the *.sav to be [CLIPBOARD] selected on the bottom LCD screen.
  3. Go to [S:] SYSNAND VIRTUAL/agbsave.bin and select AGBSAVE options... > Inject GBA VC save.
  4. Head back to HOME Menu. Launch the GBA game and check if the save was restored.
  5. Press (HOME) to exit back to HOME Menu. Repeat steps 1-4 for the next GBA_VC title.

This is super tedious, but the option is there at least. The reason why Checkpoint, JKSM, and even SaveDateFiler (Nintendo SDK app) can't back up GBA VC games is as you expected, they're encrypted differently than native 3DS games.

I think a copy of the last played GBA has it's save loaded in a decrypted state somewhere on the NAND when entering and then exiting AGB_FIRM (GBA mode). This is why save retrieval is one game per launch session.

I remember having to do this before to get sav's back into some games... thanks for putting the instructions there. only 7 games its not that bad.

also title sav ID matches that with the CIA I backed up and is always underneath the CIA in the out folder.... so that's nice.

I'm hoping my sav's won't go away but... its all backed up in case it does. I going to conintue to use the same SD card after transfer from Source to transfered unit when its done... shouldn't have any issues?

Big relief. Seven is totally manageable. I've heard of those who installed ~300 GBA VC on a separate Nintendo 3DS folder. If they came anywhere close to playing that amount, the horror. :wtf:

I recommend you make a second batch of the same backed up (GodMode9 decrypted) *.sav files and rename them with their game names, like "Advance Wars" instead of keeping a bunch of numbers.

This is in case your backed up (standard) *.cia custom made GBA VC can't be installed on the target n3DSXL. (Should not happen but you never know).
- or -
You want to create replacement GBA VC injections with nicer looking banners.

That NSUI program randomizes the Title ID when creating injections, so no two copies should have the same Title ID. The 3DS will treat these as different games even if you use the same *.gba rom. You can specify the exact Title ID when creating the *.cia in the CIA header options.

Your GBA *.sav may be restored to a different made injection as long as that save works with the correct *.gba it came from. (Yay, very wordy sentence here, but you get the jist).

I tell everyone this who I've come across when it comes to SD cards. It gets grating and very annoying to the regular members, but this advice is fundamental IMO.

Unless you've checked it before or would like to diagnosis if it's safe to continue using the same SD card when starting a fresh 3DS setup.

  1. Copy everything off the card onto a computer.
  2. Reformat the card as FAT32 + 32 KB cluster size. Use guiformat if it's bigger than 32 GB.
  3. While it is empty, do a Full Write + Verify Test with H2testw.
  4. If the card passes the test (ie, free of hardware defects), delete the *.h2w files and copy everything back on.

wow ok so I did the transfer and...

I actually got to keep some of my games... Kirby triple deluxe and smash bros, whitch were not ligit CIAS, stayed on the system. Mario kart was and it was kept. weird! everything else start from beginning.. looks like it was wise to back up GBA VC. Your right about the inconvenience- its a shame mGBA doesn't do a good enough job- EXCELLENT with GBC games but tacky emulation with GBA ones

I'm gonna go thru it to see what I can recover the source 3DS is a fresh start.

godmode9 and luma work... how can I get the basic things like fbi and lumaupdater going on former (TN) system?

looks like we got it- simple "switch current app to boot up homebrew" in luma. then run FBI from homebrew and install it from there

I still dont understand how kirby TT and smash got away from the check. also I had Luigi mansion dark moon and mario kart 7 in eshop reserve... I unlinked former owners NNID and got to keep monster hunter 4 U as part of the free download- that's a free legit game there. makes sense since the new 3DS is Monster Hunter 4 U version.

Here's where you would be hit with the answer to study the 3ds.hacks.guide.

But since you've hacked before, you can use my cheat guide found here.

There are several popular *.3dsx homebrew apps already collected in that archive. Your most likely interest is the tutorial video in Rosalina HBL injection.
