I too have long pondered the same thing (well not that long but on occasion for many years)- the best answer I have come to is that it seems to be a mirror of the "hate" between the French and UK types (more often just the English), most combinations of "bordering" Scandinavian countries or Australia and New Zealand albeit without some actual history* behind it all.

*yes that is a "what history?" joke pertaining to the USA.

In short in the never ending quest to determine who is an idiot in this world it makes for a fairly effective shortcut to the answer. New Jersey seems to be the same but for the more geographically challenged.

Minor get out of such thing- if one was compelled to spend a portion of youth somewhere courtesy of a "holiday" with the folks in a manner befitting of the stereotype it might be acceptable to harbour a mild dislike of somewhere.

Have you been to the ER in the US? It isn't much different. Probably 9 out of every 10 people in the waiting room for ER shouldn't be there, and they are slowing it down for everyone.
