I am not sure if this is the right place to post this but I wanted some recommendations for which camera to buy. I know there are guides online but they were too confusing lol I don't need tons fo features just something as good as a phone. I lost my iPhone 14 last month and a bunch of my photos with it because I don't remember my iCloud password which would have never happened if it was just a normal camera with an SD card I could plug into my computer.

So I just want something decent for 4K 60FPS videos, nothing fancy just shooting myself at my desk and the occasional photo.

Sorry if this is not specific enough but I really don't know anything about cameras.

Important to know is your budget.
I'm assuming you want a fixed lens one (and not one where you must have a lens, can swap the lens etc)
That being the case, look specifically for fixed lens cameras, maybe look at the "top 10 lists" 5, 10 years ago and pick one from that, get something second hand etc

Is this the main reason for going down this route?

I ask because there are alternative ways to keep copies of photos/videos without relying on the cloud, even with iOS.

There is one other reason, iPhone storage is too expensive lol and I sometimes find it limiting.

You may want to buy the sd card soon then as prices have shot up and/or stock harder to come by, at least where I live for reputable cards.

I have a 2TB SD card lying around.... bought it for my switch but support is better on 1tb and lower.

Time to switch to Android.......and turn OFF the default google drive backup from the stock photos app. If you don't have a real yearning to learn actual photography, I'd save the money and trouble and just get a few years old, upper-mid or top model of whatever Android phone that has features you want.

Here's a camera recommendation...sure, smart phone cameras are convenient, but in a lot of ways they suck.

I don't have this exact model, but the Panasonic Lumix cameras are easy to use, have wonderful zoom and good image stabilization. Basically, it in the one camera that does **almost** everything, and while it costs money, doesn't break the bank.

Android also has soldered-on NAND, and basically no mainstream flagships support microSD cards...

Exactly the type of camera I want but it's too big to carry every day :(

Wtf does NAND has to do with anything? And, plenty do like Xperia and just plug in your criteria on GSM arena. Otherwise, Ricoh GR series, but again, you'll likely never actually use it like a Nintendo system, and would have thrown your money into the wind.

If you feel you DO want a camera thing to really play with - go Nikon. Any new or old Nikon Z camera (that has your vid specs) and you'll be set for life.

Well, I shoot around 10TB of video a year, on a tiny 250GB non-replaceable NAND, that is not great for health as I don't replace my phone very often. SD card is easier and cheaper to replace.

I love the Sony, but it's not exactly mainstream so I can already see parts not being easy to find (compared to iPhones that is, even if it is more repair friendly).

Looking at cameras but it's a sensory overload lol. Maybe I should just ask ChatGPT for advice......

If you do this, at the bare minimum check whatever source it uses as AI is known to "hallucinate" i.e. make stuff up.

For what you want though, You're probably either going to want to look for an Android phone or at least a mid-range camera which can still cost several hundred £/$ or a DSLR.

Unfortunately smartphones have taken over allot of the consumer space.

The second hand market may offer something cheaper though.

Maybe have a look around for some reputable professional publications, if there are any where you live or maybe even see if there are any retailers which have store units for you to try.

Usually when shopping these days, I'll look for a model and then look up reviews for said model.
