Hacking Can I use an USB DVD Reader on a Black Wii(D3-2 Drive)

My friend has an Black Wii with a Softmod made with ModMii, on 4.2 fw. It has a D3-2 Drive within it. So my question is can he run backups with an external DVD Reader. If yes, do I need any special IOS/CIOS or anything else?

Maybe, but it would probably have to be from a USB Loader, as no programs current'y look for a disc from USB (weird) and having the Wii look for a GAME from USB is much more likely.

Hermes Uloader does that. Just use his cIOSes (222,223,224)

But gamecube backups can't be played anyway. I think it is better to invest on a HDD.
