It's a bar code, a more complex code that can encrypt mroe data in it I believe.

It's one of those DoCoMo ad thingies they have in Japan. If you take a photo of it with a Japanese cellphone an image will be created

Im instantly reminded of the Nintnedo scan cards for the card scanner.
I remember seeing a hacking guide on those things with a very simular image with the three boxs.
Though the image could be of any box shaped scan code, so who knows.

if you send him a PM he'll decrypt the code for you
I guess there are online decoders though

Aye I think Quickmark (which can also scan QR codes) are preinstalled on some Nokia units. When I got my N95 it's already installed there. (Same with HTC units I think, it's in my HTC Hermes, HTC Touch Cruise.)

The DOCOMO calling card QR codes were kinda smaller for some reason (but can still be read by any QR reader).

UPS started using those barcodes about 8 years ago. Maybe that's why it looked familiar to you?
