Bricking is when your wonderful and useful DS becomes as useful as a brick, except that it's not as heavy and a brick kills people better.

It is reversible if you have FlashME on your DS. Otherwise, you're fucked.

It's reversible if you bought it at walmart less than 30 days ago and you still have your recipt and you tell them it dosen't power on.

Both Nortons and McAffee (yes, for PCs) have definitions that check for certain "crashme" files, though bricking could still happen if you're just getting started with upgrading your ds firmware and you either cut the power or the unit turns off before flashing is complete.

You really don't need to be worried about commercial releases having any problems; it's the homebrew you should really be concerned about. Take it as a vital rule not to run programs from people you don't know or nobody has commented on.

The best way to protect yourself is of course using Flashme on your DS, that way you can still recover from a brick attack. Regular DS firmware does not have any protection.

Anyone know if Nod32 can detect them? Are there any known DS malware out there other than the one DarkFader made?

A guy on Pocket Heaven claims a Mario Kart DS rom bricked his but he also says the game played fine, it has me worried that brickers can be placed in roms in the same way intros and trainers are.

He could have been using a old version of flashme to play Mario Kart thats why the DS bricked. You need v6 onwards to play the wifi games like Mario Kart.

Flashme is a replacement firmware for the Nintendo DS that does a few things:

* Ability to boot NDS programs from devices inserted into Slot-2 (GBA port) without the use of a separate pass device hanging out of Slot-1 (NDS port)
* Added protection from malware through the risk of running unknown homebrew on the NDS to prevent corrupting the firmware (aka "bricking") the NDS
* Stealth run option. Retains all the same look and feel of the original NDS firmware, especially keeping the Health and Warning screen intact. (Non-stealth option removes this annoying screen and enables a faster booting NDS)

Since it is a firmware upgrade, it is software.
