It does do it's job for people without cfw
Not really, it dumps the exheader incorrectly (which IS indeed a known issue - but most of those people are the ones who don't do their research then try to rebuild a title with the bad exheader, have errors, complain on forums)

I don't think that's the case. I used it to make changes to the romfs, and run rom hacks with HANS

Hans doesn't support external headers/exheaders in the first place (only using the base app's), but it matters when reassembling a cxi/cia/3ds

Which is when? This tool is meant to build romfs not cia files
Braindump does dump CXIs (a type of NCCHs, the other is CFAs), only older versions dumped romfs'es alone

Of course, you can extract a romfs from a CXI (which typically contains: header, exheader, logo if not in the exefs, plain-region, exefs, romfs) if that's all you care about; but if you were to use the whole CXI made by braindump... it wouldn't work

And cia/3ds files are made of contents/partitions/apps/ncchs (different names for the same things), plus some further data that can be generated

All I used it for was making private rom hacks to pokemon games and running them with HANS
