What is the best controller for Smash Ultimate? We have lots of different options to choose from. Right now I'm using the Switch Pro Controller because it is comfortable and already in my living room. Competitive players will always go with a GameCube controller. I'm tempted to buy one but don't take the game seriously enough to spend the time it takes to find a good one.

Back when Brawl was the latest title I always used the GameCube controller because the Classic Controller sucked while the Wii Remote + Nunchuck and sideways Wii Remote options were downright awful. With Sm4sh I always used the GameCube controller because I didn't like the GameCube controller shaped Classic Controllers and refused to try the Wii U Pro Controller or GamePad.

So for those who do not play this game for love or money what do you think the best controller is assuming there are no budget restrictions?

    EDIT:
The Pro Controller does have more input lag than the GameCube controller. Casual players probably wont notice an extra 5-7 milliseconds of lag. If you're playing competitively you should go with a GameCube controller.

IMO nothing beats the feel of the GCN controller for Smash, whether you're competitive or not. The wired connection reduces input lag some, and the clickiness of the joystick/shoulder buttons are just so satisfying.

If you're targeting to play competitive, get a wired GC pad, otherwise, choose what you find more comfortable, I prefer WaveBird or Wii U Pro.

Well the OP did ask what the best controller was. Are we not allowed to give our input?

The best controller for smash will always be the GameCube controller: no input lag, the hexagon to move/click the left joystick, the A and B buttons being separate from X and Y and how easy is to switch between them, the muscle memory from playing the other games with the same controller, etc.

But if you're having fun with the pro controller and don't plan to bother with technical stuff like "you have X frames between this and that", by all means stick with it. The game is even playable with the sideway joycon (compared to how awful the sideway Wiimote was), so unless you miss the GameCube controller feel or plan to go competitive, then you can use any controller you want.

Sadly 3ds controller doesn't make a return :ninja:

But would be nice to have classic controller. It feels lighter than the switch pro.

The very first thing I stated was that it was my opinion. That's a given, though.

Wired hasn't shown less input lag than wireless on the Switch. The opposite is more often true.

Travel distance on L/R on the GCN also is an unnecessary hindrance for this game. Some of the 3rd party imitators address this pretty well.

That said an octo-gated analog is essential since the game refuses to support d-pads.

First time i have heard someone describe an analog stick as clicky. :wtf:
I really like the Switch Pro Controller, and it seems like you're happy with it too, so why not just stick with what you have.

Well I believe the GCN joystick has some unique design elements, and the hexagonal enclosure definitely helps amplify the 'clickiness' of it. All modern controllers have the round enclosures instead.

Then why did you say this?
"That's just a opinion he will choose what he wants."

    Isn't that just an opinion?

The pro controller has less input lag than the GC controller - I recall it being by 3 milliseconds. Not that it matters much, but the GC adapter actually introduces more lag than then Pro controller, just to clear that up.

That being said, I still find the GC controller to be the easiest for smash (for me personally), since the jump buttons are closer to the A button, which makes some things easier, although I greatly prefer the shoulder buttons on the Pro controller.

If all GC controllers disappeared forever though, I'd be perfectly happy with using the pro controller for smash.

    This one (on attachment).

I'd say it was developed to enjoy Smash Bros.

    snip for offtopic

I've been using the Pro Controller and have been loving it. I'm not a competitive player, so that might be it as I've heard from my more competitive coworkers that they prefer the gamecube controller.

I tried using a GameCube controller but found the Pro Controller to be more comfortable because it is bigger which makes it more suitable for my big hands. As far as latency goes, the Pro Controller is good enough for casual play.
