Gaming Best netbook?

My mum has a new computer (desktop) so I decided not to get a laptop, just a netbook for schoolwork and stuff. So what's the best netbook and is it possible to dualboot ubuntu and windows 7 on a netbook and if so, how?
Also what will be some good programs that will be able to run on my new netbook.
P.S the price can be up to $600.

How big does the screen need to be? Most netbooks are virtually the same. Yes, you can dual-boot and it's just as easy to do as on any other computer. $600 is plenty for a netbook.

netbooks usually lack dvd drives to make room for hdd, also most only have 2 or 3 usb ports. space is rare in them.

screen size varies between 7 and 11"

and most internals are virtually the same, theres not much power in them, the only thing they have over a normal laptop is a higher battery life


to be honest, theres not a lot of stuff that will run greatly on a netbook, except office programms, a browser and a few old games/emulators.
the really good ones, those made for all them rich businessmen, all cost upwards of 1000$ or at least they did a year ago

you sound like you actually want a real laptop.
so get one of those. with 600$ you should be able to get a rather good running machine, make it a 13" or 14" one if you wanna carry it arround so much

any / all of the Asus Eee range, just fit your price.

when buying a netbook, the most important thing you should have in mind is the battery life / usability "ratio"

if your buying a netbook for other means than that, then there is no reason imo.

What's a good laptop small laptop for $600? I see that alienware one. Is that any good?

What Alienware one? What model are you talking about? I don't know any models that are less than AU$600.

I'm guessing you're talking about the M11x. That doesn't have a DVD drive and is quite a lot more than $600 in Australia. Around $1400 for the base model last time I checked. It's a powerful netbook, but if you're strictly doing school work, it's overkill.

Netbooks generally have 2GB of RAM or less, in addition. The M11x by form-factor is a netbook, but it has the hardware of a pretty powerful notebook; so it's not really a netbook. Any of the Asus Eeee series will work nicely, (great battery life). All you're supposed to use a netbook for is light-internet browsing, note taking, etc.

I'll be honest, it's still pretty difficult to tell what you really want? You say you want a compact form factor, which is why you're looking at netbooks, but you also say you'd like a DVD drive and the ability to "play games it can handle" (not sure what that means, since any computer plays games it can handle).
