Your probably going to need to replace the case(aka gut it and put it back together with a new case) but I am not certified or anything, so maybe you should wait for some other answers. At the minimal you will have to replace some parts and your best bet is probably to pay someone with the knowledge to fix your 3ds. There's probably a local store that does ipods/other elctronic devices so your best bet would be to go there, unless you want to take the DIY approach which is worth taking under consideration as well.

I agree, the damage does look quite big on that hinge, and trying to work around it with a quick fix will not make it look any better :( . I've seen videos of 3ds tear downs and they actually dont look that hard, maybe you could buy the part needed and give it a try, or get someone w/ experience help you out.

I highly recommend just sending your 3DS XL to Nintendo to repair rather than trying to repair it yourself. If you mess up Nintendo won't repair it and you're stuck with that cracked hinge and possibly a broken 3DS.

If you're willing to repair it yourself, here's some tip:

Well as long as you don't need to replace anything on the top screen it is easy, otherwise it's a nightmare. Looks like you won't need to go to that extent fortunately, you just need to take apart the lower half.

Follow this guide just to the point where he removes the motherboard, don't go any further, you only need to take apart the bottom half:

Make sure you pay close attention to each step as you'll need to know how to put it back together.

I found a replacement part for the hinge and inner bottom plate here for $12.34: http://r.ebay.com/fnE32r

I repaired previous DS models without sweat and had the same blue model and the same hinge repair/level of damage. It is a bear to put back together (and I did my DSi XL upper screen replacements) because of the short ribbon cable lengths and more of them. I also suggest Nintendo do it. there are peeps on Ebay that will do it for $50. all inclusive though. that's parts and labor. I wish I had gone that way....
