Was just wondering if there were any mods or hacks that disable region locks and let you get around those restrictions?

For example, letting you play US UMD movies on a Japanese PSP, or vice versa?

The psp custom firmware does this. You will need to find out what version PSP you have and how to install it. Just use google. You can then play any UMD movie from any region. The latest PSP firmware is 3.40 OE.

Actually, I'm finally getting a PSP and I just want to know some of the drawbacks of getting a Japanese one.

So I guess this answers my question. Thanks for the help, guys.

Wow it always occured to me that O is confirm and X is cancel, just because where those two buttons are and they look pretty obviously like O and X. Never knew other versions had different buttons.

Drawbacks of Japanese version:
Square button is a bit stuffy, you can get it A/Sed for free though.
UMD slot could have a gap, if larger than 1.5mm you can get it A/Sed for free.
You need an adapter for the charger.

But after custom firmware, there is no distinct dis/advantage of any version, besides hardware issues.

Yes, everything runs faster on memory stick (As long as you have good one, like genuine Sandisk 4GB)
UMD is such a concept failure, besides the fact it's hard to make a backup UMD due to its shape and such.
