The world owed people like him a huge debt. May he rest in peace.

While that's 100% true, it's not very often Veteran's are rewarded as much as they should. A lot of times, after they come home from the war, they still have to go out, get jobs just to make ends meat. A lot of jobs don't even look at Veterans as a real holiday, and if they have a Veteran working for them... oh well.

I totally agree! I'm a huge supporter of the military and the modern idea behind the military, I'm just not always a supporter of the people in charge of that military. If it wasn't for brave men and women signing up to protect the rights of it's citizens and those around the world who can't protect themselves we'd all be living under proper dictators. It is definitely shameful how alot of veterans are treated, I know several myself. It's one of the problems though when profits for corporations and their right to earn as much as possible is put ahead of the building of social structure. It's why I believe in a certain amount of socialism. I think it's the governments duty to ensure that soldiers leaving service have jobs and housing. There are plenty of charities you can either give time or money to if you want to help veterans though.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those who blindly believes that all soldiers are heroes, there are plenty of bad eggs in the military. Most however deserve our support and thanks. That's why poppy burners and troop protestors get me so enraged. Protest against illegal wars, fair enough, protest against individual soldiers who use their position as an excuse to play real life CoD, again fair enough, but most soldiers just aren't like that.

May he rest in peace and be honored as a man who stood up for what he believed in.

Not just what he believed, but for humanity.

I heard about this the other day. May he rest in peace for all that he has done.

My High School actually did (I say did, as our school district is so poor that we couldn't fund it this year) a Living History Day where hundreds of veterans from all wars would be invited in to talk and be honored. It was fantastic for my freshman and sophomore years of high school, and I was genuinely disappointed that we weren't able to have it in all its glory this year.

I believe Frank Buckles actually visited one year, but sadly, it wasn't a year that I was able to go.
