I also heard that some of the Korean games and some trimmed games had major issues with starting up. Wasn't there also an issue for translated games? Have you used rominator to check the validity of the roms you're loading to the card?

It's always probable that she did overtrim all the roms trying to save space or that she is using the reader that came with it, or some other reason. just asking to cover more ground when he looks at it or asks questions.

Put all the games into a folder named "games"
still some stuff on the root, don't know if it's meant to stay there...
still doens't load and freezes. Should I format the SD?
Any other options?
What else could it be and are there meant to be any files on the root...if there are what are they? And where tdo i put them? System folder?
Sorry...I don't work with DSTT so I'm a noob

Folders and the system files should be on root, also if you are using moonshell or dsorganize, some other homebrews like quake/doom may require the .nds to be on the root and a folder to accompany. normal games go into the folders, any media files into folders as well. Try using the panasonic tool to format the sd, 4 gb and under to fat, anything over to fat32. the tool allows that to work on the 4gb. Try formatting and using rominator to put all the games on there so they validate as they are inserted. if all of that goes through and it all validates, it may just be that her cart is bad.

Yes, I would reformat, re-install the latest firmware, make a "games" folder, and put a few .nds games in it. Then see if you can run the games.

If they work, start adding new games into the "games" folder. Make sure there is plenty of free space on the microSD card for save files.

She has nothing but games and the system files. She doesn't have a SD reader so we're using the one that came with the DSTT...heard that (like the others) they can corrupt the SD. Hwever, she didn't use that reader to put on the files, she used the one in her computer (inbuilt).
Haha...well she did say that she bought the cart from Malaysia super cheap so I suspected something...
If it goes wrong again or I can't fix it, I'll post up here.

Here's a screenshot of the files.
Could it be a problem that I'm using a mac?
She uses PC normally (and so do I)

EDIT: Fixed

For some reason I put the sd back into the computer, then into the DSTT, started it up and it worked :| weird :S
