It was for the GBA but it is similar enough to what you would be doing on the DS, and actually is similar enough to most systems out there.

5.3.4 covers the basic making of the cheat.
5.3.6 covers the part about editing the instruction.


For editing in the instruction you have two main choices.
1) Replicate what the cheat devices will be doing. This will typically involve finding something that runs all the time and adding a little extra to it.
2) Do like that and edit the instruction to prevent it from doing what it originally did.
 
Sorry for "reopening this" but using DSATM whenever I load the usrcheat.dat with the cheat codes i want to hard code into the ROM the program crashes.

right click the program, change the compatibility mode to windows xp (service pack 3). this solved my problem
