Hacking Action Replay DSi and Dsi system FW above 1.2?

My DSi system is currently on 1.4.4, and I seek to downgrade it someday so as to be more open to flashcarts(preferably without hardmodding a hole in the back for connecting to a Raspberry Pi system via wire-connected Micro SD adaptor). I have already used the Action Replay device on my older DS lite with good results. The Device is currently at FW 1.14 right now. I feel I should update it someday via USB and the mini-DVD esque disc that came with it put in a connected external optical disc drive drive to my Dell Laptop. What FW should I update My AR DSi to in order for it to work on post 1.2 Dsi Firmware? Or should I downgrade first , then do the Action replay stuff?

Why do you need to downgrade? Acording to the dsi.guide website you dont need to (Basically if you dont have flipnote then its hardmod only)
I got hold of 2 action replays a few months ago (DS and DSi) I had to buy a cable for it though

I use mine with a Windows XP virtual machine, I bet you could use somthing newer but I want to make sure it all works coz the software is old. it also took a while to figure out the firmware updating tool is completely different to the tool to upload/manage saves (Which i actually have a few problems with)
