Long time member but I don't get around to posting much. Just thought now would be an opportune time to let the people that run gbatemp.net that I think it's a great resource and it's one of the pages I frequent multiple times a week. Keep up the good work and thanks for everything you do.

@xenon: Hopefully people won't report wantonly, but if you are about to let loose on a troll, don't.. please report it instead. I've seen threads go south within a few minutes, and I can't be around all day hunting. If someone reports a post, my mail proggy goes *ding* and I check it out. I don't think users "policing" each other is contradictory to self government at all, I think it promotes it.
Well, self-government would mean to deal with issues between peers without appealing to a superior entity. Users (citizens) govern themselves without electing or otherwise placing someone *above* them to be governed by. As fond as I am as a model of society without hierarchy, I understand it is not completely compatible with human nature, and prone to develop flame wars (here) and violence (in real world). Also, GBATemp is not comparable to a natural society since, by its nature, it has members who legitimately own and lead the community, as opposed to the (unfortunately theoretical) "all were born equal" in real world.

Enough politics, I know. I agree we see too much flaming and general stupidity on GBATemp (other similar sites are worse, though), but I think it's an almost unavoidable consequence of the low average age of members. I don't want to say wisdom always comes with age, but certainly it doesn't abound in pre-teens.

I hope my low post count won't completely invalidate my theories!

And thank you for replying, mthrnite.

"self-governing" implies the mods and admins think themselves above the normal user - I can't say I've seen anything to suggest they think otherwise

I thought there was a "special forum" for those w/ 1000+ posts...

Meh, sorry, I think I have been sorta involved in this. I apologize to modshroom, the only member so far I have flamed. And from now on my posts will be fairly useful...

That said, OMFG!! I totally forgot about teh report button XD

By the same token, I can't see anything to suggest that you don't think yourself above the mods and admins. Perhaps this is just a problem of perception. You are rather a daring bloke, are you not? I sense quite a bit of pride backs that up as well. I have humbled myself amidst the members of this board on more than a few occasions, and second-guess myself constantly as I moderate. I don't mean to set myself forth as a shining example or anything, but to date I have had few complaints against me. I get rubbed raw from time to time, and that can get me a little stern, but certainly it's the exception, and not the rule. I don't think your statement holds water, except as an inflammatory device to invite challenge.

Please forgive my language, it's been a long day on several levels, and I'm about to fall the hell over. Seriously. I hope you take my point well.

edit: Oh, and xenon, well put. You sound like someone I'd enjoy coffee and conversation with.

Nah, I had over 1000 posts before and I didn't see anything

Oh, and a bunch of people were talking about the R4 on Nintendo's forums, and all the 9 year olds come here to ask about it

Nice, a response instead of deleting my post and giving me a warning, which most would do. I've been an admin and mod on many forums, and have seen what giving the slightest amount of power to somebody on the internet can do to them. They never debate a subject, they are ALWAYS correct. They never apologize if they do something stupid except maybe to a person with more power than them - the regular user means nothing, is always inferior (unless they think it's a girl, which is hilarious). They will use the full extent of their power (if there isn't somebody watchful higher up) on the slightest infraction - one they probably commit often.

Oh, remember "swordsmyth"? He's a super mod on an emulation forum, whose admin got pissed at gbatmw for yelling at him for stealing links. Having a larger community, our admin got pissed at the users who outed him.

If mods are admins would challenge instead of summarily banning, I would be a little nicer

Good day, sir

(I hope that made sense, I sometimes leave out random words, for no apparent reason, besides my obvious insanity)

BIG surprise, my post got axed making me look like the big huge troll when ALL I said was "ban me." Really, my post was so detrimental to the discussion that it needed to be erased off the face of the earth, just like that ?

kellyan95: When have we ever banned someone for no reason?

yuyuyup: Your post was an example of what we are trying to get rid of. Your post contributed nothing to the topic at all.

Thankyou for dealing with this in a nice way mthrnite. We're very lucky that the mods treat us with respect instead of downing the ban hammer whenever they feel like it.
