A Newbie Mistake

I'm a newbie who sent a PM to a user before reading the welcome message and it turns out I can't PM anyone until I become a newcomer, is there a way I can correct my mistake?

One last question here, the welcome message said that I'd become a newcomer after posting 5 forum messages, I did that and it says I'm still a newbie. Is there something I'm missing?
