A new 2D Metroid game is in development, titled Metroid Dread

The first original 2D Metroid game in 19 years has just been unveiled. Nintendo has shown the initial footage for Metroid Dread, which features traditional Metroid gameplay elements, as well as a general horror vibe, robots, and exploration. The game will be launching later this year, on October 8th, for the Nintendo Switch. Meanwhile, Metroid Prime 4 is still in development, but had no updates to show at this year's E3.

um..... my math might be off....
1. Metroid / Zero Mission
2. Metroid 2 / Samus Returns / AM2R
3. Super Metroid
4. Metroid Fusion
5. Metroid Dread? is that the 5?

cuz........

Prime 1, 2, 3, 4 federation force, other M.......... .......... math?

after the credits roll, samus will do her usual thing where she takes off her suit... then we'll finally find out why its called metroid dread

Please don't have the timed attack thing from Samus Returns.
The attack itself is there but it's no longer a pure counter, it's now a full fledged attack you can do while running without having to stop. The gameplay they showed is much more fluid compared to Samus Returns with none of the waiting around for enemies to attack so you can counter them.

Hopefully that's the case since it totally killed my enjoyment of Samus Returns. I would have been fine with enemies charging if they didn't magically gain HP when you miss the counter.

yes that is the 5 the prime games are a spin off universe

prime 1-4 and federation force are one universe
other m is standalone
and the 2d ones are the original story.

This is what I remember from looking at various wikis sometime back, though I don't know if any of it has since changed or been retconned.

Metroid / Zero Mission
Metroid Prime (not sure if all of the Prime sequels take place in the same period)
Metroid II / Samus Returns
Super Metroid
Metroid: Other M
Metroid Fusion

And at this point there have been enough Prime sequels that it seems like a lot to pack into the period between Metroid 1 and 2. Either way it's probably enough to say that Dread is the sequel to Fusion and the most recent events in the Metroid timeline.

Love to see another 2D Metroid game coming to light!
I hope the developing studio isn't MercurySteam.
...checks their wikipedia... damn...
They completely ruined their 3DS castlevania game, it's might even be the worst castlevania game you could play.
Samus returns is OK, but they made some questionable design decisions, like that AEON energy or whatever that was called.
Especially the invincibility upgrade, same junk as in castlevania.

And that game was a remake, they haven't proven themselves being able to develop something true to the core of a metroidvania title by themselves. Something nonlinear, with lots of secrets and different ways to go through it. As well as fun upgrades that make traversing cooler and easier.
(i haven't played their other castlevania games, maybe those are better)

I think the 3ds castlevania was great for what it was. the lord of shadows series was kind of a god of war ripoff. the 3ds game combined that with lesser metroidvania elements. lord of shadows 2 was bad though, the dev team got a really toxic atmosphere, I wonder if something changed since then.

As much as the Game looks interesting, the tired use of the Horror Walking trope is getting to me.

It is literally arse-backwards.

Whoever designed the EMMI in that Universe should be legally restrained from working on Locomotion.
Maybe Sustainable I/O, if they're really that into marrying the front to back.

I wouldn't be surprised if the whole Lore is that the EMMI rose up against their Makers due to this Design ...

wasn't there some infos on metroid dread in older games which mentioned that metroid were harvested as an energy source. so those emmi are powered by metroid, maybe they managed to took over control.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
