Hacking 4.0 Wii with Modchip Help!

Hi there,
I stupidly updated my Wii to 4.0E a while ago and it prevented my modchip from running backups such as Mario Kart and games that use that exploit which was available in the older verisions.
I do not have the HBC installed but I know that I can install this now via the Bannerbomb.
Do I have to downgrade to an earlier version and then use one of the guides here to update to 4.0 to make my backups work, or is there a way to do it all in 4.0 without downgrading?
I have tried searching google and these forums but I can't find an answer.

not sure why 4.0 blocks your modchip, has nothing to do with it! how did you update to 4.0? what modchip do you have?
and just read up on bannerbomb http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Bannerbomb downgrading is not necessary

Follow the offline guide up to step 10 and you should have enough to make backups work. You CAN follow the online guide after that point to fully downgrade and update to 4.0 through Waninkoko's updater, but it's not really necessary. The only thing you will need to downgrade for backups is one IOS so you can have something vulnerable to install cios_fix.wad and then run any cIOS rev installer, which doing up to step 10 on the offline guide will accomplish.

are they perhaps discs that used the trucha bug? changed video mode n such?

thanks for all the replys. I couldnt remember the name but yes its is the trucha bug that stopped mario kart from working. Ill try that guide though.
