It was a gimmick because of its poor quality.
Today, it could potentially be used for in-game voice chat, Skype, input for the Nintendo 3DS Sound application etc.
But most probably it is exactly the same shitty microphone as in DS and its main use will be to blow the dust off some ancient book in a point & click adventure game...
