Because if a lot of people pirate a game it will discourage the games developer and publisher to develop for that system. Big publishers usually care even more, even though tehy dont really lose a lot of money.
They are under the FALSE impression that each game pirated is a sale they lose, no matter that this ain't true.

As for Jersey Shore, I believe that people run TV, as TV always orients on current trents. Shows like Jersey shore just show us how dumb people can be, since the y watch it. Its not that TV makes peple dumb, its that dumb people watch more TV; thus ruining TV for the rest of us. And to think they cancelled Firefly... THAT IS BAD. Firefly was brilliant...

I hear a lot of people saying this, and while it seems logical I have yet to see a source of a real (not some random pretentious indie) developer 'admit' to doing so.

Yeah, this loop will never ends. I always stated that when people hack a system, they likely will profit from it. On the other hand there's ppl who do it for a challenge.
The fact is that piracy will always exist, and you can't blame the hacker because an asshole challenge you to a battle with cheated pkmns or ruins your mariokart online race.

Actually what I have seen when system can be hacked then systems popularity goes like skyrocket. I doubt many people would have gotten PSP unless it was so easy to hack it and play emulators on it as there wasn't that many good actual games on it! But Rydians link is good and it explains that there's no actual evidence between these things: sometimes it hurts system sometimes not. Let's just hope 3DS gets same boost as PSP: stereo-3D capable emulators :o~~

As for TV shows who still watches TV? There's only stupid content becouse everyone with some brain has already moved to modern thing called THE INTERNETZ! I haven't even installed any TV channels and watch everything from PC via HDMI.

Like many said here, some people use the piracy to hack the game and play online using their cheat, it is just a shame. I see the piracy for 3DS the only way that I could play some japanese games, like LBX and Inazuma Eleven GO. ( If I had money I would bought a 3DS JPN but I can´t afford another....)

As much as I love piracy myself, as I hate having to pay for games, your theory is horribly misinformed. Yes the sales of the system go up, but the company, developers, retail, and everyone in between make their real money off their periferals, i.e. the games, adapters, cases, accessories. Most companies are actually losing a small amount on each system, but they make up the difference by raping you on the side purchases.

I know the system as my previous job was at electronic retail shop. Luckily screen protectors are easy to sell :p

But as you said my "theory is horribly misinformed" but there's only theories and I based my theory with PSP which was in almost similar situation. There's almost zero research about piracy and such becouse all companies just want for it to stop. Gabe Newell made pretty good statement back in the day and said that piracy isn't usually money problem but service problem and now we have steam and PC gaming live and kicking (and cheap). Of course if someone doesn't have any money would also pirate (and there comes "(s)he couldn't have bought the game anyway so no sale lost with piracy" theory....). Anyway with flashcard/CFW on 3DS you can have so much more services: Region free, Backing up save files (VLR still has save corrupt bug...), emulators, homebrew and that rolls regular piracy. Luckily PSP was region free with thousands of japanese only games but there's just so many people screaming to get hands on couple japanese only 3DS games (Phoenix Wright X Layton, Project Mirai, Time travelers...). This means when 3DS gets hacked there's not only people waiting for free games but also legit buyers who just want to play their games from japan or backup their VLR save so they don't have to play from start when bug comes around or play old games with better emulation than Virtual Console titles offer. Based my theory on this 3DS console sales would go up 'cause people are buying it and then buying games they wanted to. Then again they would sell their old consoles and new owners of those buys games for it and so fort.
At least Nintendo took step forward as some flashcard functions are build in to 3DS but took couple back with limitations.

But just remember it's just a theory. It still could go another way around where 3DS is forgotten geek toy.
Also sorry if my language is horrible as my english is rusted and this topic has pretty hard words :\

I agree with Mario92, i think it's almost a sale strategy from Sony so sell more consoles. When it's popularity begin to fall, someone hack the console.
And PSP wouldn't lived for so long if wasn't for the hack features, emulators and Isos.

Console manufacturers make their money on game licensing -- the money developers have to pay to develop their games.

So if a bunch of consoles sell (at a loss most of the time), it doesn't help sony, nintendo, or anyone else. They need the games to sell. Then people will make money. Then more people will make games. Then sony/nintendo/etc. will make more licensing money.

Here in Hong Kong almost EVERYONE had a PSP and played games. Almost NO ONE actually bought PSP games. Stores didn't even carry that many because it was pointless.

Piracy is bad. You really can't justify it. Sure, people blow it out of proportion, but it doesn't make it good in any way regardless.

I myself am a dirty pirate and I will be the LAST person to defend it. I know damn well what I'm doing, and it's bad. No doubt about it. But I do it cause I can.

And people who say "well they weren't going to buy the game anyway" are full of shit. I buy PS3 games ONLY because I can't easily or conveniently pirate the games I want. Same with 3DS games. The minute that shit is able to play roms the faster people like me will stop buying things.

So even if I am a dirty pirate...I hope roms aren't playable.

I have a flash card and purchased it to play one single game, LovePlus. My Japanese is rusty, ergo I use a rom which has been patched into English.

To play the third in the series, New Love Plus.. I need to purchase a Japanese 3DS, and of course due to the restrictions which we are all familiar with, it can not be illegitimately patched into English.

So, due to corporate greed, I have to purchase a second console to play one game. I indeed hope I can download that rom and play it on my 3DS someday soon, I do not like wasting money. Portable consoles should never be region locked... doing so is just to make money. Of course, Nintendo is a business, however it seems its ethics have gone out the window. (May be hypocritical considering I just said I pirated a game. Although, I would buy it if I could read the language properly. I do spend money on Nintendo and LovePlus merchandise.)

This is nonsense. "When popularity began to fall" - first homebrew run on the PSP was on firmware 1.00 i.e. the Japanese launch firmware. Popularity had not begun to fall by that time, it was barely on the market (it wasn't on the market outside Japan at that time). It's not a sales strategy, as noted above most consoles are sold at a loss relying on game sales to turn a profit (notable exception last gen was Nintendo).

To be honest, I would have never bought a console if it wasn't able to play downloaded games, as we don't have enough money to buy games. Someone who is able to buy, should buy to support companies, publishers etc to continue making games. So it really isn't a bad thing. Not for us and not for the companies, as they gain money from sales they would never get if it was not hacked as I am not the only one who has low budget. And now getting back to topic.... how is the progress going? (hacking progress)
