O, I know what Homebrew is do you? Most people who use homebrew also use it to pirate games. So this whole notion that homebrew does not equal piracy I do not buy that crap for one minute and anyone with a brain should not either. Homebrew allows piracy whether or not it was there original attention is up for debate however the outcome is always the same Homebrew leads to piracy.

I even think it leads to less piracy not more (why pirate what you can have for free legally).

linux is open source. will the 3ds be fast enought for linux? will the 3ds accept better cpu and ram plus the built in hardware? i accidently updated my 3ds to 11. i might have problems. this hack could work with SD card.

Just so people are aware, the above post is satire. Torrents themselves are not illegal, copyright being on something does not make distribution illegal, and home-developed software itself is not illegal.

When you look at Windows as gaming platform there's massive amount of piracy over there and most likely will be on linux also when all the cheap gamers switch over and there won't be "let's support linux gaming" spirit. Luckily steam keeps things mostly under control and indie bundles has gain popularity.
Just think about it honestly: When actually 3DS gets hacked how many would consider only to use it with homebrew? There's tons of games lurking around the internet and zero homebrew at that time! I think after that console sales would go up like rocket though and weeaboos could play japanese games.

For someone living in US you have terrible english. If "we" hack the console it means full access to console and all the games are hacked as well. This is also why people are starting to use android as gaming platform as it's open and everybody can make "homebrew" for it and everyone can install it even if it's not on Google Play. If Nintendo or Sony would allow doing games that easily for their machines things may be differend.

Normally I'm a proponent of "lol u all are liars ull pirate", but... if there's only homebrew and no piracy, people will still hack it and play with it if the hack is easy enough.

  Emulators. Most people, myself included, prefer emulators to most other homebrew because it gives us access to a far larger library (a single NES emulator lets us play on average over 500 games (and that's assuming imperfect compatibility) while a single homebrew gives us one game.

  Most people are concerned with the amount of entertainment (which includes length of entertainment in total) they can get out of their investment (just look at the people on this forum asking how long a game is and about the replay value), so an emulator (which gives hundreds of times the entertainment) is going to get much more use than your average homebrew.
  
  In addition, the quality of most retail games is simply above that of most homebrew.

  It's happened before. Half-Byte Loader (HBL) on the PSP was the only way to run homebrew on later PSP models (later 2000s that had been updated, 3000s, and the Go) for years. And for years there was no piracy on these systems (even though there was homebrew) because HBL was a user-mode exploit (ISO loading was not possible, nobody ever made an ISO loader for HBL). People used it to run high-quality homebrew and emulators, and they liked it.

Well that's usually also pirating as mostly people download them instead of dumbing them and nintendo wants people to use Virtual Console*. But you do have point in there as PSP does have better reputation being emulator miracle than game console itself and even android has every emulator available.
Nowdays as emulators does work with every smartphone there is and PSP has physical buttons there wouldn't be much reason to play them on 3DS even if it was possible. Emulators supporting 3D display would be awesome though. Nintendo already showed "3D classics" where layers were shifted couple pixels here and there but they are still same games that are played over and over and over again only on differend platforms.

*and then only port handful of games and release them seperately and randomly on each platform they have and some without multiplayer support. Brilliant!

Most PSP emulation stopped development years ago, so while it's great for a handheld, it's really showing it's age in relation to Android devices.

But it's got working buttons.

So you are saying that its better if android get ported to the 3DS instead of linux? I have read the 3DS hardware specs on 3dsbrew and I believe its powerful to run android. I have faith in this new save editor that poped up on amazon. I havent been able to discover its price. Anyone know more details of thishack/saveeditor tool?
Hope its not just a save backup.

If running "homebrew" leads to piracy then most of the PC pirates should use linux instead of windows.
But since that's not the case I assume the PC platform didn't need any "homebrew" for rampant piracy.

And neither did other platforms
-the wii had piracy a over year before homebrew
-afaik there already is 3ds piracy but no homebrew in sight
(its limited but might grow as module production costs go down)
I don't know about the other consoles (more a PC guy)

Yes, homebrew if available will be used as one way to pirate.
But there are (obviously) other ways that are used too.
When there is no homebrew those will simply have a greater share.

Yeah, the China manufacturers have you covered if your overall goal is to not give nintendo money. They have the knowledge to make bootleg games as seen with the Ace3DS Pro. I'm sure if you look around ebay you'll find a ton of bootleg games.

This makes no sense at all. Windows isn't a closed platform (it's closed source, but it's not closed off to developers). Anybody can develop games and applications for Windows, and Microsoft even make some pretty awesome development tools FREELY available for Windows - development tools which are far superior and easier to use than anything available for Linux).

So what would a homebrew enthusiast have to gain by switching to Linux? If he wasn't to play openly downloadable software, there's far more available for Windows than there is for Linux. If he wants to get into developing software, the path to doing so if far easier in Windows than Linux.
