patching ios 80 is for playing installed wad games off an sd card, correct? is that the only way to test if it's been patched correctly? I thought my vwii theme might get in the way, but nope, no issues installing (just need to test it to make sure).

You're right, it's for use the official move-contents-to-sd and be able to execute from there. Well it's not executed directly from the sd but from a dynamic cache zone in nand, but you get the idea.
IDK other way of testing.

I spoke too soon, I guess. when I deleted the game, I don't think I gained that cache data back. what could've happened?

nm, it's called sd card menu data. I just deleted it, and it gave me back my data. before that, I was installing the game, then deleting it from the internal memory.
