Hey GBA Temp,

Now I'm not sure of the procedure here but I'll try to explain, a few months ago my brother-in-law purchased a N64, and Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time cartridge from an online seller.
Neither the N64 nor the game was working, I did get the N64 working repairing some water damage. But after examining the LoZ cartridge I discovered its a pirated version that didn't work, no battery backup etc.

Long story short, he admits in an email that he's selling the bootleg cartridges and he's been selling them for $40-$80+ a piece.
So he replaces the LoZ cartridge with another BOOTLEG Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time cartridge.

Now, I'm personally okay with hacked stuff I once jail broke my Wii just to see if I could, but the fact that this guy is doing it to unsuspecting people, like my sister doesn't sit right with me.
After having several strokes and losing all her stuff when a water pipe broke in her house. I dunno it bothers me ya, know?

Would the game even work right? Without the CIC chip she could get through the ENTIRE GAME and then be shafted during the final boss with Ganon.
Having thrown away money to a seller who openly admits he's selling bootlegs.

What are your thoughts on the matter?

The CIC chip has been hacked and replicated already, to the point that open source implementations exist and provide region free compatibility, among other things (see: UltraCIC used on Everdrive cartridges). A “well-made” bootleg would feature one of those, or a CIC harvested from a worthless game. Of course you won’t know if it works until you try or inspect the specific board carefully. Either way, buying bootleg cartridges is always a gamble and if you’re playing pirated content anyway, you may as well buy a quality unit like an Everdrive, load a hacked ROM through that and know that it is going to work precisely as intended. We’ve reviewed a great number of Krikzz’s products before and they’ve never disappointed us - they’re expensive, but you’re paying for quality. If all you care about is the label on the cartridge you bought, you can just print one yourself - either way you’re not using a genuine Nintendo 64 cart.

Wasn't aware it advanced that far, like my biggest concern is if the individual has been selling bootlegs that won't work.
Someone taking advantage of my sister in such a way doesn't sit right with me. I'm not sure if the cartridge I posted will work either for the game based on what you've told me.

Unless I can manage to get to the end of the game where the anti-piracy measures show up.

Change your title as this is so misleading. There is quite a few scammers on eBay selling repro's and even counterfeit manuals/boxes. I wish people would not profit from selling as to me its still piracy.

If he's selling without admitting it's bootlegs he's a scumbag. I knew there are bootlegs of GBA, GBC, SNES (colored carts and 1000-in-1 games carts), but N64? Damn.

I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.
Veho @ Veho: That's a relief to hear. Do you know what happened?
