If you want to play DOS games on DS, use DSx86 instead. That thing was just a proof of concept that never got properly developed. Also don't bump years old thread, man.

i skimmed through this post and didn't see if anybody tried arena or battlespire on this, those would be awesome on any platform.

Nope. I have a R4i gold RTS, maybe i can get it to work on the 3ds version of dos emulator, although i haven't even been able to get it to boot yet.

As has been stated many times, dosbox DS was a proof of concept, a failed attempt, with which it is not possible to play games. The ones that seem to work freeze a little later or are so slow as to be unplayable.
Use this instead, which is far better: very old DOS games work with this:
