'The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles' gets new gameplay trailer

Releasing next month is The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, the official localization of Dai Gyakuten Saiban. To give fans of the series a look at the core gameplay and new gameplay mechanics featured in this title, Capcom launched a brand-new, 5-minute gameplay trailer today.



In The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, the classic Ace Attorney courtroom and investigation sequences return and also introduces two new gameplay mechanics: “Summation Examination” and “Dance of Deduction”. In “Summation Examination”, players must identify inconsistencies between jurors’ statements so as to proceed while in “Dance of Deduction”, players will be tasked to correct Sholmes’s conclusions and uncover the true facts of the case. while in the former

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles launched this July 27 on Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Steam.

1:08 Multiple-person testimonies, an Evidence menu that looks eerily similar in terms of layout and visual design, interrupting Pressing a witness to interrogate another witness...was this game, perchance, based off of Professor Layton VS Ace Attorney?

The trailers and stuff are nice and all but haven't all the AA fans already tried playing the game, the translation mostly? It doesn't feel new and therefore not too exciting.

Though due to the translation still ongoing for the second game, I never played that so I have something to really look forward to. I would probably also enjoy replaying the first game.
I haven't played the translation - too much of a hassle to track down a Japanese 3DS or Android (and 'jailbreak' my phone) ROM in order to patch and play it.
As a result, this will be my first time being an ancient Japanese DA.

Still, I'd find it fascinating to see the differences between the fan translation and the official one. Maybe it'll end up on Legends of Localisation one day? Maybe? Probably not; Mato's a busy guy.

You wouldn't have just used a patched ROM on your region 3DS?

Yeah the differences would be interesting, I hope there are big improvements compared to the translation, though that's difficult to imagine. Proper voice acting is also something to look forward to.

Nah; from memory, several years ago, when freeShop used to work, I did manage to download Japanese versions of Bravely Default and Second so I could rip the uncensored costume files from them and make an uncensored patch. Ever since Nintendo altered the eShop and downloads to shut down freeShop, I haven't discovered another source to get Japanese ROMs (and discussing potential sources is banned here anyways).
Changing my console's (and eShop's) region could've been an option, but it's not like I've got a Japanese credit card to purchase games with...

So you're saying you can't find JP Roms on the net at all? That's pretty odd, I can find them even now, including this game. :unsure:

Herlock Sholmes is hilarious and my favourite part of the localisation so far.
Keeping the Ryunosuke Naruhodo's name completely unchanged bothers me far more.
Not so much that it'll stop me from buying, but still...

Plus, btw, a patch wouldn't change it when they say herlock in the audio

No because he's not in Pink Floyd. Preferably it would be something Japanese that still registers as punny in English, like Dowolf's fan translation attempted. Leaving it as-is confuses the lore (how is a Naruhodo related to a Wright?) and feels like a symptom of the literal-translation obsession at worst.

And you seem to have missed the point where I said I like "Herlock." I was just pointing out that it's technically flawed to attempt changing, so people should just accept it.

Not every generation of a family is going to have the exact same surname for all time (my maternal grandfather has a different surname than me), and Asian immigrants to America would often have their names forcibly changed at immigration stations like Angel Island. It's not uncommon for marriage or cultural issues to cause surnames to be lost or changed over time.

Janet Hsu has also gone on to explain why she made the decision and it has a lot to do with remaining faithful to the game's representation of the cultural clash between Japan and England during the time period. Ryunosuke's story heavily involves his nationality and ethnicity and an awkward faux-Japanese English pun in the main characters name would not really reflect that and would detract from it more than anything.

On the one hand, I could’ve continued with the approach I’d used for the mainline games and gone the complete localisation route, completely favouring accessibility over authenticity, but instead, I chose to go in almost the complete opposite direction and favour authenticity over accessibility because the needs of the narrative willed it so. Here was a character whose identity and story is entirely grounded in his Japanese nationality. So while it was already my preference to keep him Japanese, the situation left me with no doubt in my mind that he had to be Ryunosuke Naruhodo.

With his name squared away, the next question to answer was, “Will he still be Phoenix’s ancestor?” to which my immediate response was, “Yes, of course!” Perhaps you’re wondering how I could reconcile the two characters’ backgrounds so easily, but as an Asian American, the answer couldn’t be plainer! Why couldn’t Phoenix have Japanese ancestry when he lives in such a multicultural country in the first place?​
