I played Dragonball: Advanced Adventure today and I really enjoy the simple but fun beat-em-up action combined with some simple platforming.
What are some other great games in this genre? (does this genre have a name?)

My systems: GBA, SNES, PS1/2/3, PSP

EDIT: suggestions on other systems are welcome as well I guess if the games are really good.

In terms of platforming, Celeste is hard to top. But admitted : when talking beat em ups... That ain't one.

Guacamelee 1 & 2 certainly deserve mentioning. It's a bit metroidvania, but hardly maze - like. You collect mostly Mexican wrestling combat moves... That's also the theme, BTW. The story is light but fun, combat is decent (though the first one takes a bit to get going) and there's plenty of variety. It's...on every system you don't own, apparently (oops). But okay, it plays on a two-bit computer as well.

On the SNES, definately try out final FIGHT 3 (edit : only now noticed I wrote final fantasy by accident :P) if you've got the chance. It's not really a platformer (unless you call "going right except when you smash open a door" platforming), but it packs a punch in the "beat your fellow human into the ground" department.
Turtles in time is the more classic answer, from when konami still made good games. It's also 2.5D with a minor in platforming and a major in cowabunga-ing.
Then there's lost vikings 1 & 2. These lean (much) more on the puzzle side. You basically control three dudes: one that can run, dash and jump, one that carries a shield and can paraglide, and one that has sword and arrows and is only in the first game because marketing said they had to have some action in their game. Okay...I'm exaggerating a bit, but the combat is a bit stale compared to the tactical nature of it. Back from when blizzard wasn't known for their craft franchises.

On the GBA platform, I only know Mario vs Donkey kong. Yeah, sorry: I'm more of a sucker for puzzle platformers, so...erm...perhaps ninja-five-O ?

If you've skipped over my last paragraph you want to dismiss my PS1 suggestions as well, as they all consist of Abe's Oddyssey and more Abe's Oddyssey (and Exoddus, I presume...Not played that one to proverbial death).

I...think that's about it that I know of. Of course there's the classic double dragon series (latest is neon, isn't it?), but...to be honest beating enemies and jumping chasms doesn't gel well with me (or even with the industry).
I mean...okay, the pang series, for example (it has an entry on SNES...I think it's called buster bros, though). That one has action (you're shooting bubbles) and platforming (climbing ladders and so on). But it's still considered more a puzzle platformer than an action platformer. Should that spark your interest?

My choices tend to skew a bit more action heavy, have more emphasis on shooting and be more difficult but for the sake of adding a few

Hopefully you have heard of Contra. Not actually my favourite series but worth knowing about.
Megaman is noted for a reason but might be a bit far from what you want. Do also look at the various spinoff franchises (battle network is a RPG but that are non mainline megaman platformers that some seem to really like, and have a bit of a story).
Various xmen titles that are 2d are usually pretty good for this.
GBA wise then yeah ninja cop/ninja 50, hopefully you don't have to pay the second hand prices for it though. Many of the other ninja titles of similar style (revenge of shinobi being among the more notable) might also play here, but I will actually go sideways here and say maybe consider mark of the ninja on PC.
GBA Turok I really like but is also really if not hard the unforgiving.
Gunstar Heroes and its GBA sequel of sorts in Gunstar Super Heroes are good stuff.
Speaking of megadrive then loads of good stuff there that many do not know about http://www.racketboy.com/retro/best-sega-genesis-action-platformers though I run hot and cold on vectorman. If beat em ups are more your thing then obviously there is streets of rage and various golden axe titles (even if they are more isometric) but I will throw in (or would that be down?) for 2 crude dudes, it is not a great example of the concept but I do really enjoy it for some reason.

Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers on the SNES is a pretty good beat'em up that has a few platforming sections. It's more beat em up than platformer, but the platformer sections are pretty simple which I think is what you're looking for.

FAST mentioned X-men games as well, and one I'd specifically point out that I personally love would be X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse, also on SNES. Same kind of gameplay as above, mostly action beat'em up with simple platforming, but the action part is much more difficult (IMO, anyways) and more satisfying. Definitely worth a look.

I'd have to agree with @Taleweaver about guacamelee 1 and 2. I haven't played 2 yet, but I liked 1 so much that I had to buy part 2. I bought both on the switch. a game that's somewhat similar, in that you encounter lots of puzzle rooms that force you to use your moves in new and creative ways, is monster boy on the switch. I've beaten that game, but I ended up dying over 400 times according to my stats upon beating the game. I don't have 100% either, but I managed to do it all without an faq, which you'll want to do with guacamelee. it's very satisfying when you finally make it through a room that way. :D I haven't beaten guacamelee (not sure if part 2 requires knowledge of part 1, but I think it's a continuation of some sort). I think I'm in the last area, but I'm stuck on a certain room where you fight a bunch of enemies. there's just too many of them. haha

Once you learn the weird jumping quirks of Cave Story, it's a really fun shooter/platformer. Unfortunately, it suffers from what I call "Mega Man Derangement Syndrome" where it forgets what enemies you killed offscreen, and they're immediately back on the screen again. This is super frustrating, especially for modern games where the memory limitations this was designed for no longer are an issue. Mega Man games still do this crap, for example, in Mega Man 11. It really hinders any "progress" and kills any motivation to finish levels.

While enemy respawn is extremely annoying, I do enjoy it sometimes, SOMETIMES, for resource farming. Low on health? Just keep going back and forth and killing that one enemy to refill your tank completely.

Yeah it's okay in Kirby games for the most part, due to some powerups being scarce. But that's the only game I can think of that it's useful for me.

It's not a beat 'em up, but is one of my favorite game ever: The Klonoa games on PS1 and 2.
They're simplicistic puzzle/platformer with adorable, charming character and a fun, light-hearted story.

At first.
I won't say much to not spoil anything, will just say... don't let the kiddie-look fool you, eh.

For something more action-y... Would say Drill Dozer is a very underrated game, eh.
It's a Gamefreak game that ain't a Pokèmon one for once, lol.
You play as this cute little gal thief with a mini-mecha with drill arms, and you drill baddies and solve puzzles with those, ha.

I was looking forward to Freedom Planet 2, after the first game was so fun... But it's been stuck in development hell for like 5 years+, and I asked the devs on the discord when the game is slated to come out, and they muted me for 3 days... Not sure what that rude fuckness was about, but the gameplay looks like it has changed drastically from the first game with a crap-ton more show-stopping dialogue, so I'm not really even interested in it anymore. Everyone calls Freedom Planet a "Metroid-vania", but it doesn't play anything even remotely close to those style games. It's more like a mashup of Sonic the Hedgehog with Megaman jump/shoot mechanics. Or a "Mega-Sonic", if you will.

Just remembered: river city ransom. It's an older beat em up. I remembering playing this very late (well over a decade after release) and was immediately baffled never having heard of it. It's easily as good as double dragon and arguably even better.
Yes, it's just pounding into dudes, but the cons, multiple paths and sound subtitles are decent extras.

... And it has a gba release, no less. :D

Best platformers:
Super Meat Boy
Wario Land 4
Metroid Fusion
Mario Brothers Wii
Mario's Mystery Meat
That might be true, but... None of these have an actual hand to hand fighting component.
