Hardware PS3 banned for hacking when I haven't actually done anything to it

Like many of you, before the good news yesterday about the PS3 store, I wanted to pop back onto the PS3 store to see if there was anything I still wanted to buy for it (probably just some PS Classics that have gotten too expensive IRL, like Tron Bonne), but when I signed in using my new password, I was told that the console has been banned from signing into the Playstation Network.

Fast forward to last night, and after talking to three chat agents (all of whom were nice, but none of whom would/could help me) it turns out my console had gotten banned in 2020 for 'hacking/exploiting'. The thing about that is that I moved into a new house early last year, and as a result this particular PS3 had spent 10 months of 2020 unplugged in a storage bin in the basement. Like, this thing hasn't had power going into it since before we knew COVID-19 was a thing, and now they're trying to tell me I've been modding my console? I haven't done a THING to this system other than buy a crappy second controller off AliExpress years ago.

Any ideas? Do I need to just keep leaning on their awful chat support until someone actually listens to me, or is this thing strictly offline-only now? Am I the victim of some oddly elaborate serial number/account spoofing or is this just Sony getting a wire crossed? I'm honestly disappointed to the point where I might sell my PS4 to buy one of those nice Gamecube-color Switch Lites, but I'd still like one last chance to go online with my old PS3.

I've heard that a lot of idps were leaked, but I think that was somewhat recently. therefore, sony technically shouldn't be banning anyone. alternatively, some game fixes (if you ever used one) have idps stealers built into the eboot.bin. if that happened, someone else got you banned. there's nothing you can do now. there's no way to prove you didn't do anything wrong, and I doubt sony will care. when I called customer service after getting "an error has occurred" when purchasing stuff on the ps store earlier this month, it says in the recording not to ask questions about suspensions or banning from psn, because the customer service rep will not be able to help you. if you look at the playstation faq on sony's website, it says the only way to have a ban lifted is if you can prove fraud, like credit card fraud or something. proving that you didn't do anything wrong will likely be impossible.

Thank you for the info - sadly, this sounds right. I was KINDA hoping it was just an error caused by me cancelling my PS Now subscription recently, and I've never done ANYTHING with this console other than buy regular games on the regular PS store, but I assume you're onto something with the IDPS issues.

Ah well, it was fun while it lasted.

if it makes you feel any better, I got banned on my first ps3 as well. the account was also banned, and I was using the same account on the vita, pstv, and ps4, so I had to redo everything with those systems. all are exploited. I don't know how I got banned, but I suspect it's related to multiman. I didn't play the system often. a while back, I bought a new system, which now has cfw on it. I also bought a superslim 12GB that was going to be my legit system to earn trophies, which I lost all of due to the account banning (didn't lose saves though as I was able to resign them). however, I had issues with the ps store that seemed to be tied to a glitch with my account, so I'm still trying to get my money back for the system. I've already shipped the hdd back to newegg, since I won't be needing it.
