Hacking Can Amiibos work with SX OS?

I have an early Switch that runs SX OS with the dongle. I have the Switch updated to 7.1 OS. I purchased an Amiibo (purple coin finder) for Super Mario Odyssey but it doesn't seem to work as the instructions show. Do these work with SX CFW, or does it need newer OS than 7.1?
