What can we really expect apart from rampant piracy?

There have been active working exploits for a while now on various firmwares and we haven't seen much in terms of homebrew/emulators that are actually worth a toss and this has me wondering if anything would change at a later date? Devs don't seem to be that interested in this platform in contrast to say a Switch which is veritably bursting at the seams with a scene whilst the PS4 has been SOONing for quite some time now.

Like I said, just wondering...

It's a dead platform that cannot compete with PC or provide the portability of Switch. There are a lot of them out there of course, but no one really cares about the PS4. Even Sony is bringing their best games to PC now.

102 million units

The console has now sold over 102 million units, and it reached that number faster than wildly popular consoles like Nintendo's Wii and Sony's PlayStation 2. It has now eclipsed the original PlayStation in sales, and is only outsold by the PlayStation 2 — which sold over 150 million units in its lifetime.

I guess these are all imaginary people.

BTW this was just released

PS4 RetroArch (PS4) R4 Released - 21 New Cores Added (PPSSPP/MAME 2015) + New Dynarec Support (Flycast)

Scene Homebrew developer @OsirisX has released RetroArch (PS4) R4, since the R3 release we have seen a number of changes and improvements to the multi-system emulator that is still considered an unofficial port. While there there has been alot of cores converted to the recently released Open SDK (OOSDK) due to the Open SDK still being new and in the early phases something's like libc++ support for instants is missing support and thus preventing some libretro cores from being converted to the Open SDK currently (More then likely when everything is converted we will see this port actually become officially adopted by the libretro team). This release is built on v1.8.8 (of RetroArch) and the update also includes some new libretro core's for the PS4 (gameOS) and those include PPSSPP (PSP), MAME 2015 (Arcade), Beetle Saturn (Sega Saturn), VitaQuake 2 (Rinnegatamante's Vita Port) , Opera (3d0) and various other retro console from the past as seen in the listing of new cores included.

This release also include some new features as well, the complete list of new inclusions can be seen in the details provided in the R4 release notes below. Some of the highlights are dynarec support for the Flycast (Dreamcast), Also Mupen64 Plus & Parallel64 (Nintendo 64) have increased performance with support of the Angryjion plugin.. A number of other improvements have been made as well, see all the details in the release notes from the developer, included below..

Shake your head as much as you want but unoptimized shovelware that runs like crap is most definitely not worth a toss. Have you seen the state of Reicast? Its terrible.
Because no one developed the GLES wrappers. It could have been done when reicast came out if anyone cared.

Exactly my point, my angsty little friend. See, there is no need to be upset - as the old meme says:

Certain "scenes" just seem to pop off like Switch, 3DS etc.. and bring back the old OG Xbox days vibe with their activity, accuracy and optimization whereas others (like the PS4) seem to exist solely for piracy and seeing as the replacement console is just around the corner all the promised SOONing might possibly materialize which is the point of the thread.

My prediction:

It'll come out, people will pirate. The end.

Devs, oddly enough, like working on live platforms as every active scene has been on a current console and what little action the PS4 has had has been mainly piracy oriented which isn't something I give a toss about as I buy games.

What is crazy though is that the machine itself has enough raw power to be able to emulate an immense amount of systems perfectly (if devs were motivated - this is something I'd happily pay for as I've said many times) and yet its trounced in that respect by the PS Classic. Crazy isn't it?

Heh I’m not upset @replicashooter , I would just like to see more devs and more progress too. Sorry if it came across like that.

The PS4 scene is more smoke and mirrors than any other scene I have known.

The issue is we have more beggars than valuable devs, and no one is interested in actually doing something to further anything.

Yes, that is exactly it. The scene is just so shitty. I miss the old "pitch in on a party" days back on DC/OG Xbox as it was so much fun and everyone learned as they went and just threw things together so it all evolved at a phenomenal rate.

The OGXbox is a high water mark when it comes to what a system can be made to do, and do so well, and that is what cheeses about the PS4 because its got the grunt to surpass that but devs these days aren't cut from the same cloth as those of yore.

Granted the whole market has grew exponentially in the past 20 years and along with it the subculture of modding but still a part of me can't help but think what the PS4 could be. Also the "wannabe a social media star", trolling and whipping up entitled little kids into a frenzy for laughs are all new aspects that contribute to all this as its a brave new world.

Prediction:

EOL CFW. Piracy. Crickets. Devs move onto PS5. More SOONing.

Realistically speaking I should just get an NVidia Shield or one of those small PCs for all my emulation needs but there is something so appealing in making a machine go above and beyond its intended use...

I'm with KiiWii on this one. The PS4 scene has been a total let down. I'm more interested in the emulation side of this since PS2 emulation opened up. I really enjoyed attempting to fix broken PS2 games with custom configs but without a further exploit a lot of PS2 emu templates have not been dumped. I even created a custom update PKG that added english translation to a Jap game and unlocked DLC with some help from the vita scene.

Mainly the vita scene has flourished, because they released the exploits on recent firmwares which allows anyone to get a vita hack it to make homebrew compared to the ps4 5.05 (which is a really old fw) that it's hard to get. hopefully when the time comes an exploit will be released, but it will be most likely at the PS4 EOL or when the ps5 is released.
