Transfer Saves from PS1 to PSP

The purpose of this tutorial is to convert saves from a physical PS1 Memory Card to virtual PSP Saved Data, using a Windows PC, without PS3 Memory Card Adapter, DexDrive, PicoMemcard, MemCARDuino, or CWCheat.

In order to complete this tutorial, the PS2 needs to be running FMCB to retrieve the save, the PC needs to connect to the PSP Memory Stick Duo, and a USB storage device is used to import the save from the PS2 to the PC.

PS1 Memory Card >> PS2 (FMCB) >> USB >> PC >> PSP Saved Data

0. Download

1. PS2, uLaunchELF
  • Insert USB into PS2
  • Copy RAW save file (mc0:/ ) (mc1:/ )
  • Paste save to USB (mass:/ )

you can extract through hex like this. I just confirmed it:

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

SC is the beginning of the save. go down 8,192 bytes or 2,000 hex length.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

save name is here:

it's really just two headers and a footer that's different.

Allright i made it, im playing The Crash bandicoot 3 on real PSX now that i played on PSP! :D

Note:
I thought only official PS1 memory cards work so i ordered another one and again, its a clone, but this one works! So apparantly not all clones are bad for use in PS2. I have PS2 Slim by the way!

OK so here's how i did, it if anyone else wants to convert FROM PSP/Vita (adrenaline) to real PlayStation memory card:

1.
First, i downloaded MemCardREX and VMPtoMCR converter onto desktop, extracted...

2.
Next i connected My PS vita (or if you have PSP) to a PC and navigated to "ux0:/pspemu/PSP/SAVEDATA/" and in there i located my save game
(in my case crash bandicoot 3 usa version that i played on PS vita to 60%, its named), i located my save file, its in folder "SCUS94244" and in it i copied only "SCEVMC0.VMP"
to desktop (thats a 60% save file i made on PSvita).

3.

Next i need to convert it from .VMP to .MCR using "VMP2MCR" that i downloaded and extracted earlier. I click "Open" locate and open "SCEVMC0.VMP" file that i copied on desktop, click "Convert", save converted file do desktop under any name, in my case "Crash 3 usa".
Now i have "Crash 3 usa.mcr" file. It will say "Conversion Complete" when done.

4.

Next step is to open MemCardRex that i also extracter earlier.
When opened i click "File" than "Open" and located my
"Crash 3 usa.mcr" file that i converted on desktop.
Once opened it will show below.
Right Click on it, "Export save", and under "save as type" choose
"RAW single save" and save it on desktop.
Now i got "BASCUS-9424400000000" no extension, it's RAW file i presume...someone here can correct me.

5.

Now THAT is the file that i need to just copy on memory stick and on to PSX memory card.

So I copied "BASCUS-9424400000000" to memory stick wherever, or root is the simplest, plugged USB stick to PlayStation 2 (i have hacked PS2 with FreemcBoot on my memory card in slot 2, in slot 1 is my PS1 memory card), i go to "uLaunchELF", opened "FileBrowser" go to "Mass:/" find my "BASCUS-9424400000000" file i copied, highlight it, click "R1" on a controller, select "copy" with circle button (its default), click triangle to go back to file browser, and than i go to "MC0:/" if your PS1 memory card is in slot 1 (or "MC1:/" if its in slot 2), clock "R1" highlight "paste" click circle to paste it, wait and when its done i have my save file transfered from PSP/PSvita to real PSX memory card ^^

Thanks @zfreeman and @godreborn

saves are pretty much universal across platforms even ones made by microsoft and nintendo. the only differences are the names, header/footer, and whatever encryption exists. this is true most of the time.

Yes i didn't know that before.

I noticed that NDS saves are not dependent ,on region, i can easily use USA save file on EUR game without any editing, just changing the names of save file and game to be the same.

now, that's interesting. one of my issues with the switch is that saves seem to be region dependent, but it may only be the name. I don't know enough about those saves. anyway, I have a game, poi, that says usa on it, but it doesn't appear to be a usa cartridge. it won't let you redeem coins stating the region is incorrect and the save is different from the digital usa one. I know digital and retail are compatible, but not when they're a different region.

Seriously, i'm kinda sick with region lockings, they make absolutely no sense at all!
By the way, i don't have switch, sadly, but once metroid prime 4 comes out ill be COMPELLED to buy it!!!
Damn it Nintendo, release it already! (it's really hard life as a Metroid fan)

I know what you mean. I haven't exploited my switch (probably never will), but I've downloaded all of the games I own for it. however, most are for Europe while my saves are for the USA version. if not for poi, I might not even know that the saves are not compatible. like you said, it could just be the name or title id of the save, since I know the title id is unique.

Yes, perhaps switch is the same as DS in that regard.
