Gaming Flies and Ant's on Animal Crossing

Anyone had any trouble with flies and ants on Animal Crossing? At the minute, the only insects I need to get are ants, flies and fleas and I cant find any of them. I've tried leaving a can and a tyre out to get flies which hasn't worked. I've tried leaving an orange on the floor for what seemed like forever and that never went off.
Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug?

Make sure you drop trash (for flies) and spoiled turnips (for ants) in an open area outdoors without buildings or beaches nearby.

Villagers will randomly tell you they’re itchy, whack them with a net to catch the flea. Interestingly fleas are seasonal. There's a Nook Miles achievement for helping villagers with them, but I guess you can't complete it in certain times of year.
