Terraria has sold over 30 million copies

Terraria released nearly 10 years ago, to the delight of many players worldwide. But just how many players bought and enjoyed the 2D sandbox world of Terraria? Apparently over 30 million, reported developer Re-Logic, as it revealed sales data for the game. 14 million copies of the game were purchased on PC, while just over half--7.6 million--came from console players. Meanwhile, Terraria has sold 8.7 million units on mobile devices. That won't be the end for Terraria either, as the Journey's End update is still slated for release soon.

I didnt try terraria for quite a while thinking why do minecraft in 2d. Ended up grabbing the mobile version when it was on sale for like 2 bucks a few years back and it quickly became a fav to play on my shield portable.
The game lets you progress at your own leisure, but there is plenty stuff to do while gearing up for boss battles or alien/goblin/pirate invasions.
I've since picked up copies for steam and switch. Looking forward to switches upcoming 1.3.5 update.

It's not remotely surprising. Almost everyone has a phone. Nowhere near as many own a console, and a fraction of that games on PC. That's why mobile gaming is booming.

It's also not a very demanding game from a hardware perspective. I think the surprise over the amount of copies mobile has sold might be over how poorly received the changes to the control scheme were. The next major mobile update will finally get controller support, as well as a complete overhaul of the touchscreen interface.

I couldn't bring myself to enjoy Terraria, tbh. I just found it confusing and feel lost on what to do on the game. Guess i am a bit dumb here :S

I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.
