CrashOveride (the same person behind GoldenEye with Sonic Characters) converted seven episodes to the N64.
With a flashcart such as the EverDrive 64, you can watch them on an original N64 console.

CrashOveride had to tackle some hefty technical challenges just to get SpongeBob SquarePants to work on N64.
Each episode is around 32MB in size and includes full audio, it’s quite the achievement.
Both the video and audio had to be heavily compressed to achieve this.

how was this even possible?

The Nintendo 64 SDK includes an FMV framework called HVQM, developed around 1998. It is capable of full-color FMV, and can get very small for some videos.

was it hard to do? did it take very long creating this?

Answering both in one: The "hvqm2enc" encoder is absolute dogshit. It is VERY slow, and I'm rocking a Core i7. It also has a weird framelimit of around 1500 frames. As a result, the video was encoded at 10fps, in 7 parts. Then, I used a python script made by Zoinkity to merge the parts together into one HVQM file, then i compiled it with the premade sample code. Encoding took around an hour in total.

why are there 2 files in the zipped download?

There are two framebuffer options in the encoder: 16-bit RGBA, and 32-bit RGBA. 32-bit has more color depth, but I can't really tell the difference. I bundled both for the user to decide.

How can I watch SpongeBob SquarePants on my N64?

  1. Download the SpongeBob SquarePants converted ROM files
  2. Extract the files using 7-Zip (or another compatible file extractor program).
  3. Place each of the .N64 files on your EverDrive 64’s SD card.
  4. Re-insert your SD card into your EverDrive 64 and you’re good to go!

And now we have finally the Reason why the Nintendo 64 was not as successful as the PlayStation.:P:D
