I'm affraid it is not possible, but if i don't ask i will never know..
My son has an old 3dsxl and he dropped it so the top screen was broken, the system was working only the screen was broken..
I was affraid of repairing it myself, so i went to a repair shop and stupid me. i did not make a backup !!!
The repair went bad and the 3ds is death now.. again stupid me why didn't i do it myself?
He blamed my son, there should be water damage on the connector, but when i got it back as a puzzle, i found out they broke a connector clip.. that's not water damage..
So we baught a new 3ds xl for him and called nintendo for his account, so the games are redownloaded..
Only the safe files are gone.. I have the old sd card and tried copying the map Nintendo 3DS but that did not help and there was no backup to install..
He want's his 3ds original without cfw..

Is there a way to play the games without starting over ?

Did your son ever had his o3DSXL Friend Code added to someone's Friends List?

The only way to recover those saves is to get the o3DSXL's console unique encryption key, and the only way to reconstruct that key when your son never had custom firmware in the first place is to have one of his friends who have custom firmware on their 3DS to dump (a part of) his key.

See posts #14 and #16 in this thread.

they broke a connector clip
oh god... the same shit happened to me. The 3DS connector clips are so fragile. I had to use a piece of paper to secure the ribbon to my motherboard from ABXY. But this introduce problems like cstick not working properly then ultimately lead to shorting my motherboard.
