the technology is interesting, older consoles and systems have this kind of shine to them that modern things don't, like for example, early-mid 90's 3d games like descent, doom, duke nukem 3d, slipstream 5000, are pleasing to look at

it's also interesting to play around with the limitations sometimes

I have the same opinion as you, the more modern consoles don't have this something and if you used to still play with it as a kid, there's someone on the heart *nostalgic moments*

i don't even have nostalgia for this super retro stuff, i grew up with a gamecube and later consoles, i just like playing around with super limited systems and seeing what kind of modern software and optimizations can work on them

kinda like seeing what running a modern DS emulator on an old UMPC from 2006 is like, or modern optimization mods for half life 2 and throwing it on really old hardware

I think so, too. I grew up with a nes and Gameboy advance SP.

Retro gaming is all the rage these days, be it originals, or new games with retro aesthetics.
Nostalgia aside, I think people like the simple design, the fact how the limitations of the hardware required some innovative solutions, the straightforward gameplay, the shiny colorful graphics, and the lack of a stick up the ass that so many modern games lug around.

Thank you for your post. I think with me it has all the "factors" that you mentioned there, and with me nostalgia also plays a role it was my childhood and it always nice to those times to the where you just put the game in to example and you had everything ready WITHOUT UPDATES!

My first console was the magnavox odyssey 2, my mom worked at magnavox - Philips, and brought one home it was the best thing in the world to me at that time.

That was my first “proper” console too, albeit it was the Videopac G7000 over here, though I do have a G7200 as well.

Just because good games get old, doesn’t mean they become bad. Sure some of the games we played way back when, with hindsight aren’t that great. But there are still plenty of actually good ones for each platform.

I still play all of my old systems, even though I don’t have quite as much time as I used to for playing the classics, they still get plenty of love.

First console was the Atari2600, bought in early 90' (yeah, i was late on the party).
i don't really play oldies that much, but i really do like restore them, and watch them work, just for the preservation.

My first console was pong. Does that count? It was before the Atari 2600. It had a wood grain finish and one knob on the right and one knob on the left (built into the console).

Didn't have many titles to choose from. Just pong lol

Mostly because of nostalgia, but also just because most of the games are just better. Original Xbox was the only good Xbox in my opinion, PS2 was the best PlayStation and I'm stuck between GameCube and N64 for my favourite Nintendo consoles.
Nintendo are really the only company that's kept their style over the past few years. Nintendo Switch is still as fun to me as the SNES and N64, but I can't say that with the Xbox one and PS4 compared with their older versions.
I just enjoyed the games more.

I love how limitations lead to creativity --something we never see anymore, pushing higher specs requirements instead.

I also have a soft spot for sound chips, so here's why I have a bunch of stuff for music making purpose being collected :D

I'm a dedicated collector of consoles and microcomputers, new and old, with a collection stretching from the 2600 all the way to modern consoles, about 30 units total with some duplicates. I like collecting them because I enjoy observing how technology has evolved over the years, plus I prefer to play games on the original hardware. It's very similar to being a historian, really - I think that devices like this should be preserved for future generations.

I have some old consoles lying around which I haven't touched for years. I think that given the massive improvement in clarity provided by digital video and the lack of 50hz throttling which plagues retro PAL hardware; for most users, emulators are better.

There is a valid argument about emulators not having the look or feel of the original hardware, this is made worse by the fact that KADE miniConsole+ still hasn't and likely wont get released. Each to their own.

It depends on your definition of "better". To me, "better" means being able to capture magical moments from the past, with the imperfections et all. I don't see any reason to run 240p games in 1080p+, I only ever bother with removing minor annoyances like unreliable loading methods (diskettes, tapes etc.) or imperfect video hook-ups (coax, composite etc.), that's about as far as I'm willing to stray. Heck, sometimes I don't even bother with that - there is a certain charm in loading a game from a grinding, humming floppy drive.

I'm with you Foxi4. I want to see the original game in all its glory. I want to play it on the original system, even if I have to get an old boob tube to play it on
