So I got an interesting situation. My younger brother has had this O3DS XL lying around for a while. He completely lost interest in it since it's bricked (probably tried to install a CFW and did wrong things to it) and gave it to me.
Now I'm wondering if there is any way to get the O3DS XL up and running again.
Apparently, the device doesn't turn on. I charged it for a while, then pressed the power switch, the blue power indicator lights up for one second, then off again. Beyond that nothing happens. Nothing on either screen, no sounds, nothing.
There is no SD card in the SD card slot and no game in the game slot. I'm 100% certain he didn't bother making any NAND backups when he tried to install a CFW and it was such a long time ago that he doesn't even own the laptop on which he tried it.
I'm feeling pessimistic about the situation, but I thought about asking here first. Any way the device can be restored somehow?

  1. Put boot.firm from the v9.1 of Luma to the root of a FAT32 formatted SD and try again. [Latest Luma release]
  2. If this does not work, replace boot.firm with the one from the v7.1 of Luma. [Luma release for an older version of B9S]
  3. If this also does not work. put arm9loaderhax.bin from the v7.0.5 of Luma to the root of the SD. [Last Luma release compatible with arm9loaderhax]

YES!! arm9loaderhax.bin works! Makes sense, was a long time ago bro here tried the CFW. So, from the config menu I assume I gotta check "Autoboot SysNAND" or do I need to do something else?

It's a good idea to upgrade to B9S before doing anything else:
https://3ds.hacks.guide/a9lh-to-b9s
Updating the official firmware to 11.9 with old Luma versions will lead to the infamous "Failed to apply 1 Firm patch(es)" message.

As no SD was inside your O3DSXL, you don't have any EmuNAND. Not much choice. It will use SysNAND anyway. (EmuNAND is a useless for the average user nowadays).

I've managed to access the SysNAND with the "Boot when R" option, everything appears in order. I'll update to b9s and install Luma3D proper when I'm home later today.
Thanks a lot man!

@SylverReZ, I also heard one of the Prince of Persia games was so unfinished that it required the "24/7 online" drm so a puzzle could be done and the game could be finished. And that when the Ubisoft servers were closed the (cracked) game was impossible to finish or something like that
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, That's extra scummy. Ubisoft nowadays ship out incomplete games like Skull and Bones which was being worked on for nearly a decade now.

I like that games can be fixed after the fact, hate that it's being abused via beta tests... And DLC... I was a 7800 owner back in the day and loved Impossible Mission, turns out I couldn't beat it because it was actually impossible lol

I never knew about it at the time but a fixed version was available but you had to mail in your broken copy lol

So that version is semi rare
