Hi,

My 2DS XL cartridge slot broke yesterday and it continuously ejects the games, they don't stay in place to play, I suppose that the spring has a problem. The 2DS XL is still on guarantee so I want to send it to Nintendo for a repair, but I have CFW.

I have found a guide to Uninstall CFW at 3DS Guide website, but I would like to know If after removing the CFW, can I change de SD, send the console to Nintendo, have it back, install CFW again, insert my original SD and have everything how it was or if I have to install all CIAS again, restore saves, and so on...

I have a lot of stuff, so having to install everything again sounds like nightmare to me.

Thanks in advance

Depends what they do, If they send you your original (repaired system) any nand backups you made in cfw can just be restored (once you get to the same cfw/os version set-up you made the backup with) with everything you had set-up on the homescreen/sd card still there. If it's a new system you'd likely need to reinstall all .cia's and such again. Gamesaves can be restored through checkpoint though.

Thanks for your answer!

Well, I assume the will just repair it, I don't think they will send me a new system for such a small problem. So, If I understood correctly, before sending it I have to do a NAND backup and restore it after installing CFW, right?

Just inserting my current SD is not enough?

And just in case, how can I check if they have changed the system?

In the event Nintendo sends you a replacement n2DSXL that does not have your original motherboard or encryption key, you lose nothing if you take those precautions.

you can check through the serial number. Also yes, create a backup of your current set-up before removing everything to send for repair. Then provided they send you your system, you just install cfw all over again getting back to the versions of everything you had and restore the backup then everything on your sd will be visible. Everything from the sd has to be installed on top of the OS for it to be visible on the homescreen and function. Restoring the backup will restore the "link" between the installations and the data on the SD. It is entirely possible they won't send you the same one since your small issue requires board level repair. They would have to desolder the cartridge from your board and resolder a new one. It would be faster overall for them to send you a new system altogether.

He would lose nothing, but he's trying to not have to go through and individually install everything again. The only way to accomplish that is if they send him his original system back and he can restore the system backup all at once.

If he wants to gamble entrusting Nintendo to not lose his setup, sure go right ahead with sending it in. In the off chance they elect to send him a replacement n2DSXL without his movable.sed with the original 0x10 byte encryption keyY, he's going to wish he did.

Read about the mess with 3DS SD content encryption.
The two bare minimum tasks he can do to safeguard himself is to backup up his stuff with a save manager and extract the current movable.sed from the SysNAND.

I'm not saying he shouldn't do that as well. From his original post it seems like he was resigned to doing that anyway. I'm simply saying the only way to not have to go through and restore each individual game/savegame backup is if they send him his og system and he restores a system backup.

Yes, and I'm mentioning worst case scenario is that his backed up SysNAND *.bin image will do nothing for him if he doesn't get back his n2DSXL with the original motherboard. Because the SysNAND *.bin is also encrypted to each specific system, he really should consider grabbing a copy of that movable.sed. With that *.sed, it's possible to redump his games into *.cia using a temporary EmuNAND. You do not want to re-use the same movable.sed as this constitutes doing an unauthorized System Transfer, like when you do this:

Thanks a lot for your responses. I will backup the SysNAND to be able to restore everything if they send me back the same console. I am also making a backup of the saves and the stuff I think it will be difficult to find again on the web, just in case they send me a new console and I have to reinstall everything.

Hi again,

I just received my console after sending it to Nintendo for repair. I have already hacked it and I just check the System Info with Goodmode to see if it's the same unit so I can safely restore my NAND Backup.

Aall the numbers are the same instead of the last two entries: System ID0 and System ID1, this two are different.

I'm not sure if this this means that I can't restore my backup, any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Different <ID0> and <ID1> sounds like your repair technician performed a Format System Memory. Yah, just do the SysNAND Restore (Safe).

I formated the console after unhacking it, to erase all traces of the hack. So, can I asume it's just that and that I can safely restore the backup?

Yup yup. That <ID0> and <ID1> changes when you reformat the 3DS system. If you want to learn where <ID0> is derived from, read the parts about keyY and movable.sed.

I just did it and it seems that everithing went ok. The only thing is that some icons are misplaced, but savegames are still there and it went back to 11.8 firmware.

Thanks a lot for your help
