I love it and it works great, but it says it plays movies? What video file format does this work with?

Thanks

Going off of old knowledge from around 8 to 10 years ago, I would imagine you need to have Moonshell. Moonshell (AFAIR) can play 10 minute clips of video encoded to .dpg format. You can use a converter called Super if its still around.

Oh ok. I'll just leave it then.

How do you access the R4 menu during a game? I haven't found a way to reset back to game menu or cheat menu? noob at this still. Haven't found much info at all?

Thanks

IIRC, you can access the menu by pressing "L+R+A+B+Y+X" at the same time. It's worth noting that this cart has a timebomb built into the kernel and depending on the kernel you are running will determine when it will be "unusable." If it's the 3.9b provided on their site, the kernel expires this year in September. They do have 4.0b, which expires in 2024, but it's not listed on their site.
You can also avoid the timebomb by using Retro's files, but you lose a ton of features.
As for the video playback, you need to play them through Moonshell and you use DPG format.

I ask the guy on nds-card if the r4 gold pro 2019 has a timebomb and he said it does not. How can you tell?

They actually weren't lying, just mislead you. The cart doesn't have a timebomb, the kernel does. Thus, if you are using the offical kernel, then it has a timebomb. You can even test it yourself, set your system to any time past September of this year and boot into the cart. If you are using 4.0b, then set your system past 2024. Plus they are still using the same hardware as every single cart that they've released since 2014.

Your right. It wouldn't boot? WTF would they do this? I would have been ****** off come September.

Thank you for 4.0b but what do I do after 2024?

Yeah, they started to it a few years back in an attempt to further push future sales for their cart. Basically, the kernel expires and they go, "Oh, you just need to buy a new cart and download the new kernel and you should be back up and running again!" And then just hope someone like me doesn't come along (again,) and set the record straight. It's worth stressing that cart isn't the issue, just the kernel that has the timebomb.
Hopefully, by 2024 there's either a crack for the timebomb or they release another extended date as they did with 4.0b. You can also use retro's files, which doesn't have a timebomb, but you do lose features like RTS and other features.

Wow that's awful. Thanks for the heads up.

Which files do I need for retro's files? Not bothered about RTS.

You should just need to copy the files out of the "R4i-SDHC YSMenu" folder and into the root of your SD card, replacing the R4.DAT
If it doesn't boot, then use the R4.DAT from this post

Best thing to do is set system date back. Easy fix. Don't use alternate kernels as they're not as nice. You can compare for yourself but i like stock kernel a lot more and it's worth having the wrong date on the console.

Setting the time back can screw up time-based events in games and have other issues, it's really not recommended to set the time back. An alternate kernel, like YSMenu, is the best way to completely avoid the timebomb and not mess with the internal clock of the 3DS.

IIRC, I had a couple full length movies that I'd watch on Moonshell. The conversion process took all night, though. It's also been well over a decade since I'd used a DS flashcard. Bought one to unbrick my 3ds recently, but that's it. :o

Thanks Lilith for the alt way and comput3 for letting me know about putting time back. I'll try both ways and see which one I like? Cheers for the help.

It is worth noting that messing with the time can screw up time-based games like Animal Crossing and that is worth keeping in mind when messing the internal clock. I am glad I could help!

I've just tested out YSMenu and it's not as pretty as the original kernel, but it does work. When I do press L+R+Y+B+X+A it resets, but then shows a white screen with text saying menu that it just stays there? I'll give it a day or two. I will say the reset is annoying already. I don't really play any games that would use internal clock.
