1. Open \savegame file with a text editor (Notepad++)
2. Go to COL. 3843 (Line 1)
2a. or search for "dollar"

"Dollar", "0x43":"xxxxxxx"

xxxxxxx = Money Value in Decimal

Thats it!

I've just tried this method, but when I start the game with the modified save file I get an error that forces me to shut down the game.
By the way there are lots of "dollar" strings in the text file.

Maximum value is 999999.

I have no "dollar" string at col 3843. The first one appears at ~ 5200

Look at the value in the game.
It's the same value in decimal that you have to enter after dollars.
That depends on what you've already played because of the exact location.

I've written down this simple, noob-level Python script to automatically modify the 'savegame' file.
I made it just to speed up the entire process, that must be repeated several times to unlock all the cars and upgrades.
In order to use it, just make a backup of your savefiles with checkpoint and, on your PC, put this Python file in the savegame folder, where the "savegame" file is.
Run the script, then delete the Python file and reinject the savefiles with checkpoint.

It's still not clear why it crashes sometimes.
I notice that if you instantly put 9.999.999 as first value it crashes. But if you first put 999.999, then open the game, then put 9.999.999 it works.

The raw number 999999
I used dots "." to make it easier to read the number.
