Unless I'm mistaken it seems as though the vast majority of HD remakes have come from the 32 and 128 bit era. And while I'm very pleased to get PSX Spyro in HD I would think there's a tremendous market for several 16 bit era games to be given the HD makeover. Genesis era Sonic and SNES Mario are the big ones.

Anyone expecting in due time games from the early to mid 90's to eventually get HD remakes? And if not how come?

PS: I'm a massive MASSIVE Advance Wars fan. If the first three games were packaged in HD, with possibly a few new stages thrown in, I think I would practically faint from excitement. Dual Strike in particular might be my favorite game of all time.

I'd love to see more remakes like Wonder Boy, with its really pretty 2D art. But what games would benefit most from it? Both Mario and Sonic would be cool, but I can't see Nintendo doing something like that, while SEGA seems perfectly fine to release the original Sonic 1 on everything but toasters.

Not to mention the old generation probably lost interest in gaming and retro games styles don't appeal new generations (except probably Sonic Mania!).

Ya, older generation doesn’t like old stuff. Even people that grew up with those games can’t stand them anymore and instead play the newer stuff. I have a hard time getting to play the old stuff so I just stick to new games when I’m with friends.

Nes and Atari and all those other systems those games were before my time but I still enjoy them. Probably because they are so easy to emulate. I don’t own a Super Nintendo but all the games I played were on emulators. It would be cool to see them remastered since people like upgraded graphics it gives a chance for the older stuff to be played by younger people.

Nobody wants to take the risk.
The retro community likes to whine and moan about every single detail. recreating sprites is hard and most likely all that hard work is gonna be destroyed by the critics even if is as close as possible to the original artwork.

I'm curious how much it costs for the typical game to be re-created in HD. The Spyro games, for example, are relatively big in scope. So I'd be curious if that was an expensive project to produce.

I would think with the right marketing, and maybe some collectors merchandise throw in, that HD versions of Sonic and Mario from the 90's would sell really well.

With 3d games you can often get away with* quasi emulation, a couple of goes on the subsurf button and maybe a few weeks to tart up the textures.

A 2d game to do anything meaningful is a different matter. Most consoles use screen logic and that would have to be recreated from scratch. Graphics wise you are also left with a few options, most of them pointless.

The better approach is a new game in the same style, kind of like what the megaman peeps have been doing for a while now, though I might also pause to have a little pondering of the Street Fighter vector stuff.

As for advance wars I assume you are familiar with http://forums.warsworldnews.com/ .

*obviously not all will and some will recreate from the ground on up.

Will give you some idea of the approaches used in 3d games.

There are some very rare persons who only like old games styles. Call me dogmatic but I only play game franchises I knew since I was kid : like mario , sonic , street fighter ...and lately I bought Fighting EX Layer!

Best thing about that was being able to swap back to the original graphics with a button, i loved dragon's trap as a kid and I liked seeing what spin they put on remastering it whenever I wanted to flick between them

I'm in a very similar boat. For the past few years the vast majority of games I've played are from franchises I've delved into before.

Code Name Steam was an exception. I played it because I love turn by turn strategies and Intelligent Systems is the best in the business at developing them.
