It seems Nintendo has rolled out their day 1 update for Smash early, and it has some bad news for those wishing to 'mod smash':

Oof, smash update is live and it's not great. Patching is handled by horizon, so mods won't be able to just abuse the update system this time around + having multiple updates means having multiple 14 GB files. RIP

Does it patch that exploit to unlock characters or not? Because I'd love to play this if it arrives on release date on my doorstep after bodying two finals tomorrow and unlock most, if not all of the characters as quickly as possible for when people come over for the holidays!

You can but keep your emunand at 6.1. Sleep mode wont work on emunand until it can be a 6.2 also but their update is coming soon.
Yes you're right but I was hoping that I could save the work and move directly to 6.2 sys and emunand because right now I'm on 6.1 without any emunand at all.

Someone will figure something out.

After all, many said it would take months for 6.2.0 to be cracked and yet SciresM and Co found a workaround.

Poor Gary, again posting about stuff he knows nothing about.

No, the update does not 'stop mods'. it just creates some minor headaches for people creating mods - having to keep multiple copies of one giant file on their computer. This is the exact opposite of a surprise. Anyone who looked at the Smash file structure has seen that the game is effectively one giant file, and Switch updates work in such a way that there isn't really a viable mechanism to make changes to the contents of that giant file (which updates would generally do) other than applying patches on-game-boot to that giant file - something Horizon has supported since 1.0. It's either that or duplicating update-relevant data that is contained in said big file in game updates, and Nintendo has long gone out of their way to keep updates for their games tiny, likely on account of the users who do not have a microSD card installed in their Switch. So.

Stick to grifting, you aren't good at the news beat.
