I wonder if anyone has thought of this but, wouldn't? a quick way to play 3DS on a TV involve the following?

* very small WiFi camera
* Some sort of plastic mount to hover the camera over the top screen
* A corresponding app to see the WiFi feed from the camera
* Your TV (+android box?) or monitor accessing said app or IP address via browser.

Again, this is a quick and dirty solution but depending on the camera used and whatever 3D printed mount someone could come up with, we might be onto something. Additionally, it would probably be best to have the camera NOT record sound and just output the sound through your 3DS speakers or to your sound system via aux cable. I'm looking at WiFi cams now just to get a general idea of hardware size and which ones either support an app or access via a IP address. I would love to hear the thoughts of everyone else here :).

Now put your idea into practice and get a better quality than existing methods such as NTR streaming.

Being a new (not "New" lol) 3DS owner I'm not familiar with how good/bad the quality for NTR streaming. I also imagine that the quality is based on the game being played and the RAM needed for the video feed. At least with an external camera, it's less taxing on the 3DS hardware.

EDIT: I tried things out with a app called IP Webcam (on my phone) in conjunction with the needed IP address from my Chromebook. So far so good. I used the HTML5 setting with auto focus on and was able to get a near 1 to 1 response. The lag was no greater than a streaming game so we're talking about very minor lag that's not game breaking. Obviously holding your phone over a 3DS is not idea but at least the concept works.

First posted from this thread; I borrowed this idea form a long forgotten early PSP camera video capture accessory. You may need a second one for the bottom screen.

I wasn't even going to consider the bottom screen. For the most casual of players and for most 3DS games, the touch screen is purely for controls so it's only occasionally viewed when doing something control related. In the case of the 3DS, it's the top screen that we're really trying to get on a TV. I would love to do some further work on this but I have other priorities, before acquiring a small IP cam. I did spot this little gem.

Couple this with a good mount and we might be onto something. The camera is small enough that it could work for a setup that's fairly slim.

With almost the same money as getting all that set up you can get a N2DS or a capture card, so what is even the point?

I didn't use a mount for this, just set up an old digital camera on a couple books in front of the screen. It was fairly low resolution, uses a codec with harsh compression, and shows major scanlines, but with all things considered the quality is quite good.

Being in low light helped, but in total darkness the camera would compensate too much. I also tried to keep the camera far away and use the zoom, since being closer made the screen's edges curve.

[edit]
The point of this post is, this "quick/dirty" method could actually produce some good results with a bit of effort.

Last I checked, a Capture card was 300 BEFORE spending the extra 80 for a 2DS. That's a lot more than roughly 80 for a 2DS plus nearly 50 for a WiFi cam.

That Layton footage looks veabeauti, even with the scan lines!

Actually, no, the 300 they charge or whatever is for the whole SERVICE of installing it, not just the capture card, without the service, if you can find one it won't be much higher than 50-60:P Also, if you are buying a system for 80, why not use all 130 for a N2DS which has NTR streaming? Seems kinda of a waste getting the weaker model only to have to pay extra to do what the other model can do by itself...

I can see your point. I plan to keep my 3DS vanilla so the camera setup would be the method for a vanilla user. That said, there is no denying the usefulness of built in streaming.

I like the system as is honestly, capture card adds almost a full centimeter of thickness making it really uncomfortable to hold. NTR still is best way though, but if you don't care about high FPS and just want capture on O3DS, there's always Horizon Mod... too bad it only puts out like 10FPS or so...
