Personally I see pirated game players as people who generally wouldn't buy the title they are pirating.

Myself if I enjoy it enough I'll usually buy it, I doubt this is going to kill the switch... 3ds did fine still does really.
Ding ding ding. My own piracy habits have me buying things when I have cash to shell out and pirating them when I don't. Games I pirate wouldn't have gotten my sale.

Furthermore I feel more adventurous to try out new games when my money isn't on the line so I'm willing to download literally any game that even interests me one iota. Game on the 3DS Ive never heard of, know nothing about but has cool cover art? Worth the free download but I'd never buy them.

All in all piracy probably is a hit or miss on wether it's truly a "loss" for thr developer. Different people have different piracy habits.

Prove us that it hurts the industry? have you made an study?, a study is shown that it hurts indie devs? show proof, not only your opinion

you can have an educational read of 300 pages here

There is no per platform results, and the results aren't segregated per publisher versus self publishing, for example.
= oversimplifying.

Look, I'm not trying to say that people should feel bad for what they do. Obviously when you download a Nintendo game, in the grand scheme of things it won't do much to them.
However OP is also wondering about Indies, and for indies specifically, they don't necessarily have a huge user base of casuals to make up for the losses.

People pirating games and not purchasing them would not purchasethem even without pirating in most cases. Also thanks to pirates that play games "for free" actual consumers can get some insight into the game, which can help them decide to buy or not it.

Despite of how media are declaring, pirates are helping developers and companies to sell their products.

I'm far, FAR from the only one on here that will buy a good game if I "sample" it. Sales of all consoles that have been hacked back to the PSX days reflect that piracy is negligible. (the 3DS is the 2nd most sold console of all time and game sales never saw a dip with the release of FBI) They see more hastle from online cheating ruining and fustrated gamers.

Drop the white knight arguments. Not everyone is a souless ginger theif .
