Hacking About to hack my PS3, is there anything I need to know?

Hey there, I'm just about to start the process of installing CFW onto my PS3. Just wondering 2 things though

I've already gone and backed up my PS3 onto another (3000) PS3 that I'll be using for OFW reasons, but would it be recommended to format my PS3 before installing the CFW?
Also, will I need to activate the PS3 for any reason? I was thinking of just making a dummy account to avoid potential bans.

Your choice, no direct advantage but I always appreciate having a clean system

No, you don't even need an account at all (except obviously for the store, online multiplayer, or online remote play)

curious, what guide will you be using?
sadly there is not a ps3 . hacks. guide as far as i know

first i would quickly update to latest fw (4.82) check the model if it's a 20x 21x or early 25x then you can install cfw over 4.82 if you have a late 25x 3x or 4x don't dispare you can Use HAN to run backups (no hb as of yet except in the form of PS2 and PSX also before hacking activate your system for games (Han only) cause you need a file created through activation (Act.Dat and idps.hex) to fake sign game pkg's for more info (sorry if linking to other sites isn't allowed) check psx-place.com also the installers/flashers are on psxploit.com (you visit them on your ps3 web browser) remember though check your MN (Model number) if you have a 25x model but a 21/20x is completely cfw-able and a 3x/4x can only use HAN

I formatted my console and installed CFW successfully using the guide on the Homebrew General over on 4Chan's /vg/. It was straight to the point and worked perfectly, granted I've been doing CFW installations for a couple of years now so I'm in-touch with the terminologies haha.

My console's a 2500, but early. Min ver was detected around 3.40, so no HAN installation here. Do I still need the activation file?

No, if you install licenses with ReActPSN it will generate itself a fake activation for the "aa" user
(you would still need activation if you wanted to install licenses to your own user with PSNPatch)
