I just have a few hardmod ideas that are silly, insane, and probably not possible.

I have seen a few rumble mods for other handhelds google ds rumble mod but it trys to do it within the stock case. My thinking is save yourself some trouble and get a grip and make the grip just a part of the case.

I also think that with the right adapters you could put an ipod harddrive or some similar storage method instead of a micro sd but I know that is kind of a ridiculous mod.

What do you think? Got any ideas for a crazy hardmod? POST IT! I'm always looking for new crazy ideas and who knows I might do some of them.

an HDD instead of a microsd card? imagine the weight, also, what could you have on the 3DS that needs that kind of storage?
This IS possible, but you would also need to have a way to power the HDD as the 3DS doesn't have anywhere near enough power to do it. However, the problem is that the 3DS has a limit to how much memory it can recognize (I think it's 250GBs).

What I'd like to see is a hardmod to make the 3DS compatible with GBA cartridges like the NDS used to be:P

The kind of theoretically you could have up to 2TB of storage but you lose a percentage of it in formatting, as for power use a ssd and have a battery that powers the drive.

Why would you want that much storage, well to have a 3ds that has every game released on it. According to wikipida there are 1279 games released for the 3ds and lets say each game is 1.5gb (about the average game size) that is 1.918TB total so its pretty close.

I've tinkered around with that idea, but I'm not sure of the best way to go about it...

My best idea is to use a gba cart dumper, and have it go in through the sd card slot.

It would require software on the 3ds to receive the data from said cart, and interpret it into something usable (.gba)

Then you would need a way to play whatever Rom you just dumped, preferably off the native hardware rather than emulation...

Its just an idea, but nonetheless somthin g I'm quite interested in!

Try to change some component of the 3ds to give it maybe more power and stuff
You can actually do stuff like disable the 3D on the 3DS to make the battery last longer (or just a tiny bit longer if you never used the 3D anyway) and turn it into something like the 2DS...

Haven't looked that the motherboard circuit any, but it may be possible to use part of an NDS motherboard (the GBA section) as a sisterboard on the 3DS, but would require quite a bit of case modding if possible...

Hmm, I was thinking of trying to interface with a raspberry pi, such could be the middleman, in the file conversion.

What I want to know is; has anyone figured out how to run gba roms on native hardware, without just injecting them into the official gba VC?

As in have a shell on the 3ds ready to go, and run whatever Rom you drop in it?

The 3DS can't natively run it, but it CAN in DS mode if you load the firm for it (take the NDS firm, inject is as forwarder for NDS, then load up and it should run GBA games from the slot if you can add one that is recognizable like the NDS had). That way you can play actual cartridges.

The only problem is, so far there is no recognisable slot...

I might have to poke around at some things and such, when I get some spare time...

Probably tomorrow

Most of the time, the people who have those insanely large 250 GB SD cards don't even play the games that are on them.
I have a 128GB SD card FULL of stuff and hardly ever play anything besides MH or Pokemon:rofl2: Plus I got tons of games I had no room to even install them, leaving them in the redownload section of the eshop...

I am going for three different things here (ignoring soldering):
1) Well. So, there are adapters which allow to use big SD cards and this works without problems.
2) If you want to use a USB stick or harddrive it's more difficult. People always say it's not possible to connect them via an (micro)SD card slot. But in fact there was this Mobidapter (https://gbatemp.net/threads/mobidapter.426215/page-2#post-6363303) which just allowed this. The thing is that it had a limit and that transfer rates were slow. But I would like to see another attempt on something like this.
3) The storage problem also exist with other devices. Most likely on android devices people included cifs support so that network drives were mountable just like sd cards (btw. the nvidia shield tablet seems to support it per default). Maybe people could try to realise this for the 3DS.
