I think you're both forgetting about the "use it or lose it" rule. If you ever go more than a week without turning your Switch on and playing a game, Nintendo will storm your house, take back your switch, and kick your dog.
It's true, I've lost many a dog to Nintendo kicking them

How do I distinguish between a brand new Switch and a factory reset switch?

You can't. Well, you could probably tell if the box has been repackaged or if the store is selling it as a pre-owned or whatever. If you can get your hands on the console even for a moment you can hit Power + Volume Up + Volume Down and that should tell you the firmware.

Hey everyone,

Hopefully not a hard question. I bought a Switch bundled with Skyrim as my thinking was that I'll just keep it offline and enjoy Skyrim until CFW is available.
So the Switch came with firmware version 3.0.2 which works fine with Skyrim but I want to download an update for Skyrim which fixes some bugs (theres a pretty bad audio bug that it fixes) but to update Skyrim it requires that the firmware be updated.

So my question is this, there seems to be a little bit of mis matched information at the moment. The switch hacks guide says
If your device is on a firmware version >=3.0.1, your best current option is to update to 4.1.0 (as it will receive CFW at the same time)
however the firmware status sticky post says
3.0.1 - 3.0.2 are interchangeable, and also good. If you're on them, *stay* on them. They'll get stuff later than 2.0.0-3.0.0 because they don't have the sm bug, and thus require more privilege escalation to use deja vu. But it will be sooner than 4.x.

So which should I believe? If 4.1.0 is to get CFW at the same time as 3.0.2 then I'll just update and download the Skyrim update then go offline again. However, I am willing to put up with the bugs if 3.0.2 is to be getting CFW sooner that 4.1.0

Thanks for your time,
Thomas

My first post, and question on GBA Temp, so please go easy on me.
I'm very much a forum lurker rather than a participator, but that has changed recently on a few forums.

My question is aimed more towards exploit implementation for the end user as the exploits become available for each firmware revision.
(I understand this is only really going to be answered by those currently working on exploits such as @SciresM, and those with experience testing said exploits)

I know Pegaswitch is available for those on 3.0.0, and have looked over the steps to use it for homebrew.
All seems straightforward for anyone with a modicum of I.T skills, and the ability to follow instructions.

My question is this;
  1. Will the implementation of déjà vu, and installation of a CFW on higher firmwares be more difficult for the end user?
  2. Is there an advantage to staying on my current Switch FW 2.3.0 or lower, (time waiting for CFW not standing) rather than updating to 4.1.0?
  3. Will there be any limitations to functionality of the CFW on higher firmwares?

Okay that was a few questions, but all along the same line.

I am currently in the same situation as everybody else, all are tired of hearing people go on about it, torn between updating my Swicth to play Sonic Mania, Skyrim, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Mario Odyssey, all the games I have purchased and left in their wrapping, or staying put to make use of CFW earlier.
There are a few unanswered questions about the latter, such as will I be able to play my higher FW games on a CFW when it is installed?
Will CFW work like the 3DS CFW, in which I can update to the latest revisions fairly easily and lose no functionality?

Answers from nearly everyone other than the Devs working on these is going to be hearsay, so I'm hoping one or two may shed some light on the situation.

I have all the time in the world.
I can wait without any problem if the difficulty of the exploit process for the end user will not change on higher firmwares, if all the functions lower firmwares have on a CFW, higher ones will too.
I'd be happy to update, enjoy my Switch with the games purchased until work is completed for 4.1.0.
Answers to these questions would allow some to make a more informed decision.

End of essay, and finally a huge thank you to those who work tirelessly on these systems, and those who work on this forum hoping to shed light on these situations and help others understand a little more.

I started wondering about the game update data. I can't update my game because my switch is on 3.0.0. But would it be possible to update a game using another switch running the latest firmware, transferring the game updates to my 3.0 switch?
I really would like to use my pro controller for binding of isaac =<

Hi, I have a question about how the joycons/pro controller communicate with the switch. Is it done over bluetooth? and if so, shouldn't it be possible to use a PC to communicate to the switch and pose itself as a controller?

Hello, I would like to understand some things, first of all I've read this whole forum and I still have doubts.

First, what would be the purpose of homebrew, CFW, only emulators and other apps? since apparently piracy is not the goal (it is even repudiated). I tought this homebrew and stuff were a path to piracy, now I'm not sure.

Second, if my goal is purely piracy, is it also recommended that I wait on 4.1?

Please do not enter into the discussion if it is ethical or not, because the country where each one lives makes it very difficult to purchase original games and other things.

Yes.
Personal (your) opinions do not make sense to the problem of piracy.
It is only strong security to decide it.

Ultimately the development of CFW will lead to piracy, but the majority of the developers who work on Switch hax are not interested in developing exploits for the sole purpose of piracy and are more focused on utility and experimentation.

CFW will come to all versions 4.1 and below, but the earlier version, the earlier it will come.

I have a few questions and i need help with all the posts here is really confused.

1.I'm on 2.0 i see a post that rayman legends needs 2,3 (and lower) but no, it doesnt work it ask me to update, so i don't know if the cart itself has an update or if it send me to update the system via internet.

2.On different posts says lower firmware is better (2.0 for example) but on another ones it say that doesn;t matter so its the same 2.0-3.0 so i don't know wich one is better, because right now on 3.0 we have emulators, and a few homebrew apps, also more games work on 3.0 than the 2.0 like rayman, and i think a few more, so i don't know if it is the same i can get the pokken game and update but if it is better to stay on 2.0 i can wait, but i need help on that question. Thanks.

Cards will always (?) come with the updates they need/require to be played (edit: Or higher in case of reprints, so be careful. :) ). Its probably a certification requirement, so its unlikely that this would change in the short term.

Lower is better. But its mostly between 1.0.0 and above, with another sanity check at 3.0.0, if you want HBL - now (and maybe a better entry point than 3.0.1 and above - we are not sure). Read this: http://wololo.net/2018/02/18/nintendo-switch-4-1-0-hack-sciresm-good-news-people-latest-firmware/

Ultimately - capability of the CFW will be roughly same up to 4.1.0, although 1.0.0 may still have the better hookpoints for stuff like emunand, or an ability to coldboot into CFW, that the others might not have. None of the TZ exploits above 1.0.0 are public, so we arent sure. But SciresM is, so go with what he said in the article. :)

yeah i know they need an update to be played, but the question is if it have it like pokken, so if i accept it update ust to the required update (2.3. for example) or it update with internet to the latest fw to play the game.

So i think i didn't get it, it is the same to be on 1.0 to 3.0 but they say 1.0 is the best option and 2.0-3.0 the second best so doesn't matter if you're on 2.0 or 2.3 or 3.0? because if it's the same, for me it's better 3.0 because you have hbl and a few apps and you can enoy the homebrew right now, but if is not, and the 2.0 gonna get more things (or sooner than 3.0) i can wait, that's my question, because i already search, i see almost every post about it, and every commentary, but all the people have different answers, but i don't know if it is a correct answer.

EDIT: "If you’re on 2.0.0-3.0.0, stay where you are or get on 3.0.0 for HBL stuff"

so 2.0 or 3.0?

Once 4.1.0 gets its userland homebrew method released, will it allow translation patches if someone makes the tool for it? It's really just swapping files in and out of ram, right? I think that's how HANS on 3DS worked, but that was a long time ago.

It is tiered.

1.0.0 will be the best option. We are not sure if there is a "race condition" between up to 3.0.0 and 3.0.1-4.1.0 for "second and third best" - but there could be. SciresM made sure to "tier" them that way, but left room for interpretation.

The differences most likely will be in implementation (1.0.0 should be able to coldboot directly into CFW, others might not - it depends, we are not sure. 1.0.0 might be able to also always run the latest official firmware "from SDcard" (emunand), others might not be - we are not sure at this point.).

Apart from that, the CFW featureset should be roughly the same.
-

The update on the game cards will run, if you try to play the game and try to update from the update neg screen there (launching the game) - IF YOU ARE OFFLINE. #protip - stay offline, while updating. Also, make sure that there isnt already a newer update downloaded (via online) at the time you are updating. If it would be, there would be a update screen nagging you regularly.

To get rid of an already loaded (but not installed) update from the "online" front. It should be sufficient to shutdown and restart the device. And I dont mean standby. If it is not - there is a way to do it by booting into and leaving the service menu. Read up on it. I don't have a link on hand. Also - and I stress this again, stay offline through the entire updating procedure. Make sure you know which software is on the card you are trying to update with.

That way, you have control over what firmware you'll be updating to.

Also - please dont act like you cant separate yourself from an "always online" ecosystem anymore - because you dont know how to turn off wifi... Too man people have fought for "always online" not to be a thing on consoles, at least not currently, than for you just to "act like it would be - without alternatives".

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

If SciresM has TZ execution on 4.1.0 he'll probably go for more than userland. ;) Userland access would not allow you to patch existing games. Think of userland like your smartphone. Smartphones apps arent allowed to modify other apps, that also run on the system - unless you have root (escalated privileges).

All modern OSes sandbox applications as best as they can, so a stray process can not modify them without bypassing all kinds of security layers (privilege escalation).

so can i update from cart (accept the update when i try to play the game)? it is a way to know to which firmware the cart gonna update to?
And no i don't have an update, i go to settings and i just see 2.0 and i think when it is an update on the console (but not installed) it appear a message instead of the actual fw telling you that the system is ready to update or something like that, so if i don't have an update, and if the switch doesn't have a wifi connected im ok to update with the rayman legends cart?

Hey! I heard a homebrew channel was released. I don't am on 3.0.0 right now but I am sure they can get it to work on newer versions. Anyways my question: What coding language is used to code homebrew applications? I am thinking about coding some mini games. And is there a documentation/will there be a documentation?

I heard libnx and libtransister use C or C+ or something along those lines. Lovepotion is being worked on too which allows programming in Lua.
