Geez I'm really surprised at how many people are still replying "oh no there go my chipping plans".. Read guys, there's nothing wrong after you chip. Nintendo isn't "collecting ip addresses" or whatever. Even if you did not chip your console you will get the message if you installed 3.0 and then select update again. It's just a simple little popup! It can NOT detect that you have a wiikey/cyclowiz/etc. Stop freakin out n read the facts!

I don't think there's any need for panic. For instance, Nintendo will probably won't go as far as to brick thousands of Wii's all over the world, it sounds mad, and I think with the partially invisible Wiikey it would be very hard to do.

I would just advice everybody to keep a close eye on this and other forums, for it's the best source to stay informed. Then you can't go wrong really.

Let's say a new game is being dumped:
* Firstly I go to the forums and see what people's experiences are when trying to burn and play it. If it's playable and people aren't having any problems: Fine! I'll download it.
* If it doesn't play: Fine I won't download it and hope there are some smart wizkids that might be able to find a fix.
* If people's Wii's get bricked by the game: Fine! I won't download it and go on and play some other games.

I really think the chances of my Wii getting bricked are close to zero:
- I keep my Wii offline
- I use the Wii brick blocker
- I'm constantly watching the boards to see what's happening

SO DON'T PANIC! JUST STAY INFORMED!

I think that from a legal point of view Nintendo is allowed to put up updates that could screw up modded Wiis. What they would not be able to do is deliberately brick modded Wiis, at least not in Europe or Australia. In the US they could probably deliberately brick them as the chips are illegal there. But in Oz or Europe, I don't think they could deliberately brick them.

But even if they could brick them, we know what to do, don't we? Just stay on GBAtemp and see what's happening.

Looking at the number of people posting on the wii forum since yesterday I don't think Nintendo would want to brick all the wii's here, just look at how many wii owners they'd be losing.

They're not bricking your console... they're bricking your console with a modchip inside. Take out the modchip, bob's your uncle. Not a difficult concept to grasp really.

Do you really think a company the size of Nintendo really gives a flying duck about disabling chipped consoles? Don't be daft. Their benefits on attracting developers to their platform / disabling the pirate-industry far outweighs the potential loss of pirate Wiis.

I'm not saying I'm happy about the update, I'm saying you can't be bitter over something you're getting for free.

I dont think Nintendo is that stupid, specially with big sellers coming, like Brawl, Galaxy and Metroid, i think this was the first step for something HUGE, and maybe well see massive Banning or Bricking. who knows, but these update makes me worry A LOT

Nintendo is definitely not stupid, but I doubt they'll start bricking consoles. Something like that has never been done before and it wouldn't exactly result in good publicity or more people buying Nintendo hardware (or software for that matter). In fact it would scare people away from their machines (mostly modders). Afaik Nintendo is the only one of the big three that is turning profit by selling console hardware (including $50 WiiMotes).

Also, since the mods available are drive mods it would be pretty hard to disable that with a firmware update. This is all besides the fact that intentionally bricking your customers property is borderline legal at best (no I dont wanna start that subject up again) and will at least result in very bad publicity. Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft are at war, the nexgenwar, so I think bricking consoles is not Nintendos intention.

As far as the warning goes, cmon! It is clearly meant as a precaution for Nintendo since I doubt they will spend any money to extensively test their updates on every friggin chip out there, so it *could* potentially wreck your modded Wii (they just cant say), which is exactly what they are saying in that warning.
Edit: Nintendo must be aware of the brickings resulted by PAL ppl running Super Paper Mario US, so this may be a result of that since in those cases, the Nintendo update actually did brick their Wiis.
how do you know what nintendo is capable of producing? you are speculating on something you know nothing about and it's about time people started adding the words "in my opinion" to their posts because it is only that and has nothing based in fact.
ok smart ass you do realise that nintendo has spent an absolute fortune on this console and to have a bunch of people take out a monumental chunk in profits would piss them straight off (this much is fact). so do you really think that to purchase what is there a dozen drive chips it not out of the realms of possibilty, get a grip will you. they would be gaining back a fortune in revenue by stopping every single drive chip working.
you've gone against your end user license agreement when you've used the update and they have the right to disable the chips ALL of them if they so wished to.
but all of this is just guess work right now but people should just start remembering the facts instead of the guess work people are making currently.

Wii modchips aren't exactly a hidden secret only available to some shady underground group of elite. Your friends are just ignorant.

I have tested all possible options last night with my Wii and haven't got any problems besides the ones i already had!!

I checked all things, shop channel, internet channel, mii channel, games original and backup's, photo channel, downloaded games, downloaded new ones, rebooted Wii, removed from power and started it again this morning added and removed some settings mostly wifi.
What i wanna say is that i tested the complete set of options that the Wii has and i haven't found any problem that could be related to this update!

I think the whole scene freaked out once there was reported only 1 wii bricked after the update and i DON'T think it has anything to do with the update (probably bad soldering or very old chip firmware). second is that nagging screen from big N about possible Wii failure after update.

Like said before, this update DOESN'T harm your Wii in any way!!!

offtopic
I have Wiikey installed and news channel stopped working after the chip was installed, i was hoping that after this update it would work again, it does in some kind of way for 25%.
Version 3.0E is the one i have now in my Wii and in main channel there is scrolling 1 news item but after entering channel i get NEWS000006 error. imo this has also nothing to do with this update, probably didn't work for many of us before the update came out?

A friend of mine has the same problem, news channel isn't working the way it should (also after chip install), same like others here, so if anyone has a fix for that

A smart way for Nintendo should be to wait some month and then release a game that need at least 3.0 and have a "chip" test. Why start bricking right away? Just wait and let us update...then start bricking

No company in their right mind would start bricking hardware. Chances are if they can detect the mod chip they will simply ban you from Online play and stop you from having a good experience, i.e. ban your wiimail, limit functionality.
Bricking is way too severe and no company would do it as it'd be suicide especially if the detection method was flawed or didn't work in every single case.

Online play on the wii is a good experience?

I guess you haven't used an xbox 360 then. The online experience on the wii is mediocre at best. Also with all this bricking talk, its never gonna happen. Unless Nintendo want to replace most of the wii consoles that have been modified. The wii has no warrenty sticker on it, so they don't know if you opened it up. It'll just be another paper mario again and people will take the wii back to the shops to get another.

I'm not convinced that the Big N are purposely trying to brick any consoles, seems to me that they just added the warning after people bricked their Wiis with Paper Mario, so that if it happens again with a future update then people have been warned.

you have to format your wii system memory in settings to get the news channel to work , so back all your saves etc onto a sd card and format it and it be back on

This is one of few rational replies in this entire thread. Everyone please read it again.

Heh imagine if they'd actually worded the warning the way everyone's taken it...all threats and doom...the term "reserves the right to" would be thrown in.

Let's imagine Nintendo was getting evil, they had the power and purposely went bricking Wii systems. So I'm not talking you could take out the modchip and everything would work as when you bought the system. No, they just broke your wii, ready for the dustbin. What would you do? Would you buy another one? I know I wouldn't.

And even if they only broke my modchip, I don't think I would buy the games I've already downloaded. Possibly I would only go and buy the BIG ONES, like Mario Galaxy and Metroid.

Again this is only hypothetical.
